Roberto Martinez discussion

Wigan are on a 14 game unbeaten run. When did they ever achieve that in the Premier League?

Wigan usually had a full end of away fans in the Premier League. In the circumstances, their own support has held up very well.

So what? So plucky little Wigan and their fans should be delighted they've found their level after 2 relegations? Behave.

Making out you speak for their entire fanbase in your desire to somehow portray their demise as a positive is ridiculous.

They average 8,000 now btw, they used to get 18,000 when they were in the PL.

Michail Antonio (1st R) of West Ham United scores his team's first goal on Saturday
Roberto Martinez has hit back at West Ham United's claims Everton have a weakness defending crosses – but admits his side are still being hampered by lapses at the back.

Hammers striker Michail Antonio, whose goal sparked the Londoners' dramatic 3-2 comeback at Goodison on Saturday, revealed the visitors had pinpointed what they perceived is a vulnerability in the Blues' backline.

West Ham's first two goals originated from balls into the box from out wide , while Dimitri Payet's winner came from a long diagonal into the area headed down by Andy Carroll.

But responding to Antonio's comments, Martinez said: “It's easy to talk, especially when you've won a game.

“When we were 11 against 11, we were the better team and scored the goal to go ahead. Then we had to change things tactically and with 10 men you wouldn't have seen a difference – it was like we had the extra man.

“Then we scored another goal from open play and controlled the game completely and never got done on crosses in that period.

“It's more that we felt we had something to lose. Winning the penalty was a massive high but then missing it was an emotional low, and all of a sudden we gave West Ham momentum that unfortunately they got a big reward from.

“It's not like they bombarded the box. They had two crosses and scored two goals, that's bad defending rather than having a (specific) weakness.

“For the first 78 minutes we were defending extremely well. We scored 14 goals and conceded only two in the previous six games, and in anyone's eyes that a well-balanced team and s good defensive display.”

Everton have now lost seven home Premier League games this season – a figure surpassed only by Crystal Palace and Aston Villa – and Martinez accepts his side are making it too easy for opponents to pilfer Goodison for points.

“We're not seeing opponents beating us easily, it's the opposite,” said the Blues boss.

“We've grown as a team, we've shown we can score goals and defend really really well, but then we go into periods where we can't really defend and we get hurt too easy and concede goals that affect scorelines with extreme ease.

“I felt the last six games we'd found a really consistent level of performance in different competitions, keeping very good clean sheets.

“On Saturday, to be so good for 78 minutes, half of which was with 10 men, and then concede three goals in 12 minutes, it makes no sense.”

I agree with him. We've shown we can deal with crosses, we've shown we can defend.
It's a mental thing imo. The world caves in when something goes wrong i.e. sending off, missed penalties, missed opportunities.
You can sense the fear in the team and opponents love it.
The buck stops with the manager, but he has shown with Lukaku, Barkley and Deulofeu what he can do with players and their confidence.

I think you'll find that most fans prefer winning to losing.
And what do you think has to happen for a team to end up in league one? Last time I checked you have to lose quite a few matches to end up there. Or do you think that teams are rewarded a league one spot for their "phenomenal" style of play? You do realise that what counts as a successful season in League one is when you get the hell out of it?! Ask any lower league fan what they'd rather have, a winning side in the lower leagues or a struggling side in the top flight. This myth of "oh I'd rather be in the championship winning games then be in the Premiership" is just that, a myth! It's what fans of newly relegated sides tell themselves to feel better. Want proof? Look how wildly sides like Bournemouth celebrate promotion knowing that it was going to be a whole season battling just to stay up and ask their fans if they'd rather be back winning all the time in the championship. You won't see Aston Villa fans celebrating come May.

So when he says "they had 2 crosses and scored 2 goals" but we don't have a weakness defending crosses you can understand that logic?

To me it means they scored from 100% of their crosses

It's not the first time I've said this, but... you know if he just put his hands up, said he got it wrong and indicated a willingness to change it... I'd give him some slack. Honestly I would. As it would indicate he has something pragmatic about him that can acknowledge when something doesn't work, and would indicate that he understand he needs to improve his mindset to management at this level.

It's the absolute lack of self-awareness that turns me against him more than anything else. These comments are as predictable as they are disheartening.

It's just so annoying. I badly wanted to like the manager after Moyes, and in theory everything Martinez wants to do is right, but the theory just doesn't come off in practice as he just lacks the mentality and skill to actually implement it.

Bah.

He isn't saying in the whole game, and he is mitigating against the turn of form defensively - 2 goals conceded in 6 games. In each of those games we've defended crosses.

You need to use the quotes together to get his point, rather than dissecting it line from line

That for me is why I am terrified of the man, He just doesnt get what most of the fans are seeing and fearing EVERY game against astute managers. I don't think were bottling it as such..just bloody clueless, We have become too easy and the worst thing is, The manager is fine with it coz were "growing". ??? Growing into a championship team yes.

Where does he say he's not talking about the whole game. And he is not talking about any other game but specifically the west ham game.

You are reading something that is not there. He's delusional is the problem.

He can't speak coherently about defensive issues because he blatantly doesn't understand defensive issues.

if this was just last season and he did it, yes.

For me he's far too gone now, last season you could count as a fluke but he's just repeated the same stuff this season.

Thing is if we win the cup (i'm not sure we will tbh) this will all be forgotten, but we'll be in the same place next season.

He's had his chance.. and if we now have money behind us to go out and get a proven winner, do we really need to take the chance to keep RM?

i don't think we do.
