Roberto Martinez discussion

But in your work, if this person is showing progression and slowly showing flashes of brilliance, you have to keep the faith and keep them around.

How are we showing progression?

Martinez is like a trader who makes a load of money but fails to close the trade in time and ends up losing money. One day a big trade might come off if he doesn't do a Nick Leeson on us in the meantime.

To those advocating Martinez as the right man for the job, what would it take (if indeed, anything...) for you to change your mind? When would enough be enough?

Chelsea for me.

He's about to take his lost roll of the dice after blowing the lot - his money, his house, savings & whatever was in his kids account. He's got his car keys down hoping he rolls a 6.

He gets a free spin if we win on Saturday, before we go again in the next round.

How have we progressed to that though, we aren't challenging for top 4 - we are miles off that, we aren't even challneging for top 6 anymore mate - we had been for years before he came though, thats the opposite of progression, we ar egoing backwards and we are losing Lukaku away from being in really deep trouble under Martinez

No mate I've said the basic premise is sound and in the long run will see us get there.

Due to RM's inflexibility (at times, not all the time) we haven't achieved it.

It's looking likely that he may not be the right man in taking us up a level, but i'm still willing to give him the next two months to prove it either way.

Saturday was a big shift for me though.

But that's not what you said mate and I quote, "Ask them whether they'd rather win that final, or spend another year scrapping against relegation?".

A direct choice between a Cup win and premiership survival. If you honestly feel that any fan would take a cup over prem survival, Wigan or Everton, then you're wrong mate.

I think Wigan fans who are unlikely to see their side lift a trophy of the stature of the FA Cup more than once in a lifetime would pick that over another relegation scrap the year after, and the year after.

I'm not a Wigan fan, obviously, but I think it's had been what I picked.

It's not like they were challenging for Europe one year, and then having dropped down to the Championship the next. They were constantly scrapping in the lower reaches bar their first season.

How so? The stats back it up...

if ignoring stats, sat:

Lukaku scores we win (bilic said so himself)
Mori clears 2 headers we win

Thats just based on the feel of how the game was going. Dont you think we would have gone on to win the game against the team in 5th place with 10 men if either of the above happened?
I would have vomit blood if i were Everton owner now...

Two things wrong with that, Zat.

First up, it should not have been a "like fir like" substitution with ten men, a two goal cushion and the clock running down.

It should have been a defensive substitution.

And even if he wanted to go like for like, Del would have been the better option for his more potent threat and ball holding ability.

Totally irrelevant though to:

a-- the tactics
b-- the formation
C-- mori not heading the ball clear

2 things apparently which were affected by the change and one which has been ignored.

So you, as a Wigan fan, would take a cup ahead of prem survival?. You say some intelligent and balanced stuff mate, but you've lost your head here.

And they were a solid premiership side till your boy Bobby came to town.

I can tell youve never worked in financial markets from that post :)

It was the wrong sub Zat. Niasse for Rom would have been fine. But not for Lennon.

As @Khalekan said, it was either go defensive or switch for Del if it had to be like for like. RM failed to react to the situation in the game...

However, you're right on Mori. He missed three headers. It's why I don't think the players should be let off scot-free either. They fell apart.

I wouldn't have ever called them 'solid'.

But yeh, I'd have taken an FA Cup win rather than another year of scrapping against relegation with more budget cuts etc etc...

Errr....

Look, we're all frustrated and my position on RM is now one of that he has for me to turn our home form around and get an end result come May. If not I'd be happy to see him go - or I'd accept it anyway.

However, he's not going anywhere before then barring a drastic change to heavy defeats so until then let's still wait and see. If he can somehow turn this around (which after Saturday i'm not so sure he can as I was before) then the time will be right for him to go.

Scoring more goals is not a sign of progression if you are conceding them at the same rate at the other end. We are more entertaining this year. We have played in some great matches, but we have lost all of them. We are no closer to being a top six team than we were last year.
