Roberto Martinez discussion

I can see what you mean mate, but it's not strictly true. Someone like Mourinho for example uses players who are tactically disciplined to play their style of football. Most of the better managers will want this, and that is a million miles away from what Martinez looks for in a player.

If there are to be signings in the Summer, they need to be made by whoever is going to be in charge long term.

We won't be getting Mourinho so it's irrelevant haha ;)

I think the level of manager we can realistically attract would be more than happy with the signings RM makes/has made - or the vast majority of them.

Lukaku is one of the best five strikers in the league, and Barkley is getting better on an almost weekly basis. Bar his shake in confidence Stones is class and only going to improve. Same with Del and Mori etc.

So, I don't think we'd have to worry about a Liverpool-type situation (where Rogers would spend £££ on anyone and anybody with a half-decent YouTube reel with some dodgy Eurovision track overdubbed on it) should RM manage to prove himself worthy of getting the transfer budget and first chunk of next season to show we can progress on whatever (hypothetical) improvements would be made in the last chunk of this campaign.

In response to your last point, t's why I say that Martinez must show clear progress at the end of this term to keep his job (IMO). If not then he goes and we do get the new man in.

Also, it's why i'd look to just go and get a manager who employs the same basic philosophy, but has the experience and capability of getting our defence back to what it should be.

Third time today I've seen someone mention budget cuts in relation to Wigan as if it's an excuse. His wage bill went up while he was there not down.

Phil McNulty BBC Chief football writer 5 June 2013 wrote;

Martinez has also had to work within a stringent financial framework at Wigan, and some of his good work this season was undermined by injuries in key areas. Martinez cut Wigan's wage bill and also lost his major attacking talents, such as Charles N'Zogbia and Victor Moses, in past seasons.

Go and look at their accounts cos they tell a different story.

And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle...

He's making a valid point that RM isn't just to blame though.

I don't agree with Zat on the sub, as it clearly effected our shape. However, he is right in what he says that had the players done what they were tasked with it could also be a different story.

In fairness if Martinez is here next season I doubt Lukaku and Stones will be, as it doesn't show enough ambition as a club.

I'm not quite sure we're talking about the same thing either. Mourinho was just an example, but a lot of continental manager's are of the same thought process.

Good article.

For me, if he does go in the next few weeks it would only be due to an implosion in the next two games.

If we had to have a caretaker in as well, then for me there's only two options:

Royle or Reid.

If they'd be willing to take up the mantle, it'd give us the time that @bluewally has mentioned. They also have the senior experience and wouldn't present a 'crisis' as they have been around the club for so long and a crucial part of its history.

Other than those though I don't see another viable option as caretaker manager.

'Showing ambition' is so vague mate, but I do know that Lukaku and Stones would be less convinced if we sacked Martinez and replaced him temporarily with U21 maestro David Unsworth...

Start of next season wpould be too late mate, your letting a manager spend upwards of say 50m+ decide on players futures, and then possibly replacing him within two months with a new man - of which you will have a lot less people free, with no time to bed himself in, with no chance to rbign players of his own choice in, you do it now or end of the season and give you the best option to get the best person in for the job with a full summer to get to know the squad and go after what he needs

Totally, absolutely 100% agree. Waiting two months into the new season is a total waste of time and possibly money!

But the home record is only half of the story. And critics keep quoting it without mentioning the other half, the away record.

Everton home record 15 4 4 7 29 26 +3 16

Everton away record 13 5 7 1 22 13 +9 22

Even under the defensively minded Moyes we managed 4 wins and 9 draws away in his last season. Martinez isn't setting the world on fire away and the home record more than takes away from any improvement.

12 wins and 6 draws at home under Moyes in that season. ONE defeat.

Do you know them personally mate?

I disagree, Unsworth (doesn;'t even have to be him) wouldn't be the long term manager and they'd know that. It'd generate a bit of excitement as to who we might get in. As I said yesterday, it's about changing the mentality of the club, and you hit the headlines, and then again when you have someone lined up to take over when the season ends. Especially if that someone is of a really high calibre.
