Roberto Martinez discussion

Totally, absolutely 100% agree. Waiting two months into the new season is a total waste of time and possibly money!

To be honest, I wouldn't be too concerned that he would waste much money in the market.

His buys have been very good in the main.

He just ain't getting the best out of them.

I would say a manager coming in after the transfer window will have a very good squad to work with.

Managers live and die by their signings and they all want to make the squad their own.

Giving Martinez a massive budget to work with this summer if there was a huge question mark over his head would be a potential disaster of Rodgers proportions. Klopp is going to have torch half of them this summer, not because they're necessarily gash, but many of them don't fit his preferred style.

I can't see the new fella wanting to splurge his cash unless he's convinced about the longevity of Mr Brown Shoes.

They therefore either take the decision to bullet him at the season's end, or they back him and stand committed for another season at least.

If we finish bottom half again for the second season running, he'll have failed, it really is that simple.

The only reason he's escaped the flack that our league form has merited, has been due to the cup runs.

He's an egotist, always has been. I remember sitting there watching his awful Wigan side at Goodison in 2011, and the way he was trying to get those yard dog defenders he had at the time to play was embarrassing. His 'philosophy' was all he was interested in. The players he had at his disposal, simply weren't good enough technically to play the way he wanted his side to play. So any manager worth his salt would have held the 'philosophy' as an end goal - UNTIL such times that he had the personnel capable of delivering it.

But not Roberto, he put the 'philosophy' first, front and centre, and that told me way back then, that he wasn't pragmatic enough as a manager, and it was all about him, and his vanity project, as opposed to what was best for the club he was being paid to lead.

That 'philosophy' eventually took them down, albeit with the bonus of the Cup run that left Wigan with some silverware (and yes that win at Goodison along the way). His football can win games, but you'll always be vulnerable to defeat with this bloke, he's career shows just that. His lack of defensive focus and the lack of pragmatism when it's needed will always make him a manager who flatters to deceive imo.

So what your saying is you want him to stay ?

haha so you're going to keep posting as if it's fact without actually knowing any of the details behind what you are posting?

Look them up yourself, it'll be good practice before you start posting hearsay off as fact. They're pretty easy to find.

The prudent Martinez has overseen a whopping 22 per cent cut in Wigan's wage-bill since he took over in 2009 - meaning the club no longer needs hand-outs from chairman Dave Whelan's personal fortune. Martinez has partly achieved this reduction by putting a three-year ceiling on contract lengths and he feels this works, even though it means Wigan lose more players on Bosmans.

Every game? All 20 minutes spread over 2 games? L O L

He's come on at least 3 times as sub and has done literally nothing. I'm not asking for miracles. Just a decent touch or pass or some good move. Even challenging for a header. He has done zero. A semi pro player would have performed at the same level as Niasse to date. I hope I'm wrong but he doesn't move or receive the ball like a high class footballer to me. Struggling to think of any other players who have made such an unimpressive start.

POSITIVES:

- His transfer record
- His integration of youth into the first team
- Giving said youth players key roles in the squad
- His style of play in terms of attacking is the best we've had in 30 years
- Integrating a system throughout the club that will ultimately lead to better chances of sustained success through both squad building and also academy and club building over the coming years
- His team set up (barring a few anomalies such as Palace (H) first season and Kiev (A) second) is often spot on

NEGATIVES:

- His knack of not seeing the blindingly obvious until it is too late (Howard)
- His inability to react/be proactive to prevent a situation occurring that puts us on the back foot
- Medaling with a team at the wrong time in a game (e.g Saturday vs W.Ham)
- His refusal/inability to accept that he needs help defensively and needs to change his way of defending - especially from crosses
- His inability to instil the mentality we had in the first season and in the past of being able to see out games
- Terrible home form

So, overall, I'd say it's about level, which is why for me he gets until the end of the season (for now).

I think my current view is I like everything RM is trying to achieve and think he is going about it in the right way in terms of building the club up to incorporate a style of play that suits us and the young players we are producing (Barkley, Dowell, Ledson etc...).

Ultimately, however, I feel he may not be the man who can take that system up to the next level due to his defensive in-efficiencies - or inability to fix those in-efficiencies, and that's why a change may have to be made.

"About level?" Wow.

I understand it can be difficult to let go of the dream we all felt Martinez was unwrapping in his first season. By now though I honestly don't see why some people still insist on desperately looking for ways to convince themselves that he's 'almost' getting it right. Give yourselves a break lads. Continuing to believe in this overactive underachiever will only ever end in tears.

His reign of terror is now hopefully down into the days and weeks rather than many months.

Lose this weekend (strangely though I think we are going to do it 2-1) and he'll see out the season as a lame duck.

We'll then be able to draw a veil over a sorry last two seasons for the club and move on in the light of a new owner and direction. Can't wait.

Question, does anyone think that Martinez is under any pressure from the powers that be. ?
I think the FA Cup is his one lifeline. If we bow out of that, especially from a winning position, I think the pressure will really come down on him from above. The increasing frustration amongst our fan base cannot have gone unnoticed, especially now the media are jumping on board.

Martinez is like a faulty sports car, sure sometimes it seems boss and speeds past others and youre made up with it.

Then it breaks down, few months later the same problem happens again and again.

But it turns out we can go out and afford a boss realiable rolls Royce because were in the money.

Simple answer is, just get the rolls Royce.

Wasn't Rio Ferdinand referred to as the Rolls Royce guy ?

Your now saying you want Rio Ferdinand in charge ?

AaronTheAgent for Rio is what you are. You make me sick ;)

Roberto is more like one of them Alpha Romeo's instead of using words like soul and passion, its replaced with Phenomenal and great character.

If we go out the cup, I'd sack him, and I was behind him for longer than most.

It depends on the manner of defeat.

If, irony of ironies, we are 3-0 down at half time and then continue to get humped in the second half I think the board will act.

Lose in a close game and he'll get the rest of the season.

So what your saying is you want him to stay ?
No, not at all. I want him gone at the end of the season, with the club doing their level best to get the best man that's available for the job in the interim.

All I was saying was that the club is likely to have it's biggest ever budget this summer - especially given the seemingly inevitable exits of Stones and Lukaku. We need it to be spent with a clear plan of the future in mind. If there's any question marks over Martinez then they ought to can him and let the new man build the team with the cash. As opposed to letting him spend it and then seeing no improvement in performance early next season and getting rid in the Winter, that'd be stupid.
