Roberto Martinez discussion

No. That position was crucial to fill before Barkley was injured.

He basically bought a £28M rifle and forgot to buy the bullets.

Unless you want to play on the counter all season as we did in Germany, that's a criminal waste of talent like Lukaku.

I half agree. But we have limited funds.

The striker was obviously the important thing this summer. So most of not all our cash went on him.

Would we have had the bullets you speak of with the £4m that went on Besic? Probably not.

They linked up really well last season. And excuse the media hype, but Barkley is supposed to be the next Gascoigne. It just isn't happening for him this season yet.

I agree though, the squad is in desperate need of a creative player. A Peter Beardsley would really turn this team into something special.

Hard to put your finger on what exactly has gone wrong this season. Bar Gerard the squad is basically the same as last year, but the performances certainly aren't. I know injuries haven't helped but some of the dire performances at home (palace, Swansea and last night hull) have been totally unacceptable regardless of what team we put out. What worries me is that even recently with the return of two of our most influential attacking players (Barkley and miralles) we are struggling to create chances and ultimately put teams to bed whenever we have been in the ascendency.
The biggest difference has been the tempo of our play this season. Whereas last season we were vibrant and exciting to watch, this year we have been slow and pedestrian to watch. When you think we have arguably the best pair of full backs in the league. One of England's most promising talents (Barkley) the Belgian duo (lukaku and miralles) one has to ask the question why are we not seeing more from them. Some have mentioned the ageing of some players (Barry, Howard and distin) but when you consider even are brightest talented players have been nullified this year the question has to be why?

Complacency....

The slow tempo at times is a strange one, pretty much every game you can hear Roberto shouting quicker quicker several times through out the game, so he obviously sees it. So wonder if its just a case of some of the players not capable of it or what.

It certainly makes a difference when we have a ball player like stones or alcaraz playing at the back, we keep a better momentum and pace to the game better.

Another thing i noticed is how long howard takes to distribute, last year he was sound, he'd get on with it quicker, he'd look to throw it out as soon as he caught it and set us on the counter, this year he waits for ages.

It's up to Martinez to secure those funds from the board, and also to be able to make an effort to buy in such a player. I cant remember us being linked with a player of that nature in the summer. It's like he just thought playing Barkley there was the solution...which based on the evidence from his first season here was obviously not true. Barkley doesn't assist too many times.

Maybe. Unless he was told the money isn't there.

They linked up well only when we broke as a forward unit from deep. Lukaku, Mirallas and Barkley can do a lot of damage under those circumstances (we saw it last week again).

When we have to play through a team Barkley cant release Lukaku. And no one else can it seems.

(BTW, a Beardsley type service for Lukaku would be amazing)

I love it when Everton bore the arse off the opposition with short, deliberate passing that inevitably opens up space, and it annoys me when the crowd tries to disrupt it.

However, when you're chasing a goal with a few minutes left there's absolutely nothing wrong with getting it in the mixer, and if I know that then Martinez certainly should.

I honestly don't what level of player he thinks he's managing sometimes.

lol

You lose faith very easily.

So, after 14 games of the season when we've been within striking distance of the top four for most of it and progressed faultlessly through Europe, you now lose faith because we're not doing what we did last season?

This is the very definition of fickle.

Things are likely to get worse at the weekend before we can think of them getting better again. But when they do (and they WILL) there's gonna be some fantastic vaulting material in the last 7/8 pages of this thread to tuck into.

Get a grip FFS. And get behind your manager.
This x1000

It seems every individual error we make this season has been punished which wasn't always the case last year. At times Howard, jags, distin, stones, Barry and lukaku have committed errors that have ultimately led to goals.
Roberto is learning as are the players. We still don't have enough technically gifted footballers who I feel can retain possession like Roberto wants. Coleman, stones, baines, Barkley, McCarthy and miralles are such players. But low and behold if we were to purchase those players of that ilk from other clubs, it would cost us 10s of millions. Money we don't have.

I gave it B- and got slaughtered. I doubt many would feel as strongly about that assessment now!

He left us wide open relying on two 30+ CBs. Players that age (esp Distin's age) can lose form VERY quickly. And he never even looked like sorting a No.10 out.

He needs to have a good January bringing in loan players or small fees for those he cant get on loan.
But if we had got that No 10 you want, where would Barkley have played? You hate him on the wings and the only time I can recall him playing in a midfield two was the first half against Palace at home last season which was hardly encouraging. The past few games Ross hasn't seemed to want to tackle anyone, even when played in the middle, which is quite a big issue for a central midfielder.

But its the same group of players that played last season, where we were more than capable of taking the game to the opposition.
