Roberto Martinez discussion

Still feel that Timmy H is the weak link..
Anyone know how Tom Cleverly is progressing with his injury....thought he was starting to become a bit of a good player for us ....much to my surprise...

Obviously, the first season was a residual David Moyes' defence. We saw a real Martinez defence last season, but now Moyes' influence has returned for the third season.

The defenders may have been Moyes', but Roberto introduced his own style.

He signed Barry and McCarthy. With them dropping back from midfield to provide cover, both Baines and Coleman were free to go forward when we were in possession.

It was a great success in Roberto's first season. But last year, opponents started pressing the defenders, making it difficult for them to play the ball out of defence.

On a number of occasions, in both seasons, Roberto changed to a back three. And there wasn't much of Moyes' defence evident on Sunday.

wasnt that the demolition we received against them lot at Anfield? Thought they were going for ten in a row and we were going for 7 in the same match and something had to give..?

No.....we went on the seven game run after Anfield.

I always put our failure to make the CL that season diwn to an Act of some malign Gid.

We were due to play Palace a couple months earlier when they were still struggling a bit.

A hurricane blew up from nowhere and the game was called off even as I was walking along Westminster Road.

By the time we played the re-arranged fixture they had picked up a bit and the rest is history :(.

...we won 7 consecutive games...Palace ended that run (at Goodison).

You're right in terms of 7 consecutive league wins but incorrect in terms of games in all competitions. We lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup after the 1st of the 7 league wins:

Mar 1 - West Ham H Won 1-0
Mar 8 - FA CUP QF - Arsenal A Lost 1-4
Mar 15 - Cardiff H Won 2-1
Mar 22- Swansea H Won 3-2
Mar 25 - Newcastle A Won 3-0
Mar 30 - Fulham A Won 3-1
Apr 6 - Arsenal H Won 3-0
Apr 12 - Sunderland A Won 1-0

We then lost to Palace at home, 2-3 on Wed Apr 16.

7 consecutive league wins is Martinez record run so far.

Obviously, the first season was a residual David Moyes' defence. We saw a real Martinez defence last season, but now Moyes' influence has returned for the third season.
What Chelsea suffers this season, is what we suffered last season.
Sudden downgrade of Terry/ Ivanovic/ Distin.
Error became critical in conceding goals.
Manager cannot always control that.
But i think the discipline was there last season.

The defence was good even we used Galloway, Browning and Funes Mori.
Give some credit to Martinez. He even never moaned about the injuries.

We've had to be in recent games. Having a regular back 4 decimated as much as we have would affect any team. Galloway and Browning are decent young support players, but they aren't going to be up the field at any opportunity, and nor should they be. Considering the hits we've taken to our defence and the nightmare of an opening fixture list, we're looking very good.
I totally agree

looks a bright future

It seems like he's only been here five minutes, but he's now the 6th longest serving current Premier League manager. Wenger, Howe, Hughes, Mourinho and Pellegrini are the only longer serving managers.
And all of them besides Wenger and Howe were appointed the same summer as Martinez.
