Roberto Martinez discussion

I still don't really know what to expect from this season, but it's definitely more satisfying watching a younger side than it was the same gang of arl arses who did just enough to sneak into the top seven/eight most years.

Think that's just a matter of perception to be honest. As soon as baines and Coleman are fit again I would imagine the average age of the team would be at least as high (if not higher) than it was circa 2006-2010.

In his first season at this stage of the season, we were 4th, 7 points off the top of the table, with a 6 point goal difference. This season, we are seventh, 5 points off the top of table, with a 4 point goal difference. (I know it's stupid to do "what ifs" but had we won on Sunday, we would be fourth)

Now let's compare our fixtures 2013 and 2015:

2013: Norwich City (a); West Bromwich Albion (h); Cardiff City (a); Chelsea (h); West Ham United (a); Newcastle United (h); Manchester City (a); Hull (h)

2015: Watford (h); Southampton (a); Man City (h); Spurs (a); Chelsea (h); Swansea (a); West Brom (a); Liverpool (h)

I know me and you are on the same page, but I don't think it's a fact that we nowhere "near the level of season 1" at this stage of the season.

We need to start winning more, but we've had a very challenging opening to the season.
I wouldn't disagree
I think I was trying to put over the first season was vey dynamic and the attacking style was a joy to watch.
This season we are more cautious and we look at keeping things a fair amount tighter, the big positive is we are looking a very difficult side to beat and we are winning from losing positions.
I firmly believe RM is building something special

Yeah, you're probably right. It's been nice seeing a fair bit of fresh blood so far this season - familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

This is what i wanted from now till next summer:

1-- Top 6 finish
2-- Young players given a chance
3-- Martinez to show he can sell/release players who arent at the level we need nor have the potential to be at that level.
4-- Past it players to go when their contracts are up Hibbert/Osman/Pienaar/Kone.
5--Sign Butland or similar and sell Howard
6-- Sign a playmaker
7-- Sign a top young forward to compete with Lukaku

We look on course for 1+2 this season. The main thing for me is to see donkeys like McGeady gone and others released and sold with a lot of emphasis on finding the 3 players we need to push on.

In his first season 13/14, between March 1st & April 12th, we won 6 consecutive league games, which is his record run so far.

That season, between Oct 19 & Dec 26, we also went 10 games unbeaten, one of our longest unbeaten spells in the last 20 years.
...we won 7 consecutive games...Palace ended that run (at Goodison).

We've had to be in recent games. Having a regular back 4 decimated as much as we have would affect any team. Galloway and Browning are decent young support players, but they aren't going to be up the field at any opportunity, and nor should they be. Considering the hits we've taken to our defence and the nightmare of an opening fixture list, we're looking very good.

Our conceded goals is amongst the best in the league. Considering who we have played, considering how much the defence has been juggled, considering that Martinez apparently knows cack about defending, (according to some last season), that aint bad.

Considering.

Obviously, the first season was a residual David Moyes' defence. We saw a real Martinez defence last season, but now Moyes' influence has returned for the third season.
