Roberto Martinez discussion

I think for a team that was missing 3 of its preferred back 4 (which included the best attacking full-back scenario in the Premier League and a centre half who will probably be the best England has seen in a generation) to dominate the game, want to win it more, and clearly show which side was superior on Merseyside (especially during the second half) says a lot about the manager and what he's done.

3 wins out of 8. 4 draws, 2 of which should've been wins if we had any decent finishing. 1 loss in which we went toe to toe with the best team in the Premier League this season- and we may not have lost had some luck gone our way. A good start. Not the best. But a good start. It's fair to say he's won quite a few us over again.

You may well be right. However, supporters aren`t stupid and they know when they`ve just watched 90 mins of utter arse. Im all for the manager sticking up for the players and trying to put a positive spin on things but standing there telling us that some of the dross served up last season was "phenomenal" didn`t help anyone.
It's October. Last season was 5 months ago. Let it go.

Last season was poor but I think it was made worse as we all felt we were destined for great things due to a really positive season. RM made mistakes and I think he knows that, but I think we can all see he is trying to rectify them and I believe he has sacrificed some of his footballing principles.
I don't think this season has been anywhere near the level of season 1, but we have had a great start when you take the run of games plus the injuries we have(I think 7 players out)

My belief in RM is he is trying to build for the future, we are seeing this with younger players being given a chance and also our transfer policy.
I have said before people need to be patient and need to believe and understand what is he trying to achieve.
As for the press conferences, he loves an audience, but rather this than the dour outlook of DM
If honest I rarely listen to the after match conferences

In his first season at this stage of the season, we were 4th, 7 points off the top of the table, with a 6 point goal difference. This season, we are seventh, 5 points off the top of table, with a 4 point goal difference. (I know it's stupid to do "what ifs" but had we won on Sunday, we would be fourth)

Now let's compare our fixtures 2013 and 2015:

2013: Norwich City (a); West Bromwich Albion (h); Cardiff City (a); Chelsea (h); West Ham United (a); Newcastle United (h); Manchester City (a); Hull (h)

2015: Watford (h); Southampton (a); Man City (h); Spurs (a); Chelsea (h); Swansea (a); West Brom (a); Liverpool (h)

I know me and you are on the same page, but I don't think it's a fact that we nowhere "near the level of season 1" at this stage of the season.

We need to start winning more, but we've had a very challenging opening to the season.

Indeed, it's easy to forget, that looking at the fixture list before the season started, it would have been no great shock if we never picked up a win in 4 on the bounce. (Saints away, City home, Spurs away, Chelsea home.)

To come through those 4 games, before two away games, and be in the position we are is quite decent. If we can hit a good patch of form over the next couple of months, we can rack up some serious points.

Agreed we've done sound so far.

The four fixtures in October will tell us where we are really at. The first game of October revealed that we will be prone to dropping points at home to teams who sit deep against us.

We're eight games in now mate. Like many of us at the end of last season you were plainly a bit disillusioned, I'm just curious as to whether or not the start to our season has won you round at all ?
Yes ..have noticed a bit of stirring in the loins this season...quite like it in Bullens Road...
Been well impressed with Galloway and Browning.
Next win on the gee gees will probably see me buying another season ticket...my 37th lol.

I still don't really know what to expect from this season, but it's definitely more satisfying watching a younger side than it was the same gang of arl arses who did just enough to sneak into the top seven/eight most years.

Nice one. Glad to hear Martinez has won you round.

I quite like the Bullens myself, and I'm a bit of an arlarse so might join you some time in the next few years :)

thats what i am waiting for. Im not waiting to see how the first 10 matches go, most of them are against teams that will come at us and we are generally pretty lethal on the counter. I want to see how he does against teams that sit back and let us come at them. I want to see if he has any idea how to do things better than last year. I want to see if he continues to play McCarthy AND Barry against Sunderland at home which is a completely huge waste of time.

We were absolute crap in almost all facets last season, we've looked good to very good in most spots this year. Even Howard has had a good match which i think is one more than last season. I really just want to see that he's learned and I think the matches against teams we should be comfortably beating is a decent litmus test.
