Roberto Martinez discussion

Totally agree Dougie. I guess this is the conundrum that is Martinez: he does a hell of a lot of good things for EFC, and then puts out a team on to the pitch that has us all going "WTF?"

Reckon it's also worth considering an awful lot of our more experienced players our inured or just back from long term problems before getting over critical as well mate.

Like I've said today was poor but how many times (even this season) have people complained about the tea and it's bitten them in the arse quick smart?

This teams still very much a work in progress as far as I can see and the ups have so far outweighed the downs in my opinion.

Again I agree. Today was a bit of a WTF? day but I'm not fulminating over it. Flush it down the dunny and move on...29 games to go.

Absolute mate, I was just as baffled as anyone with his team selection today as anyone.
why? it's pretty consistent with every other game this season.
what were you expecting some radical experiment with wingers?

Lennon + Naismith were played to support the LB and our (returning from injury) RB, even that wasn't enough. What protection would Kev and Deulofeu offered?
You could argue that a half fit Coleman and Stones was just asking for trouble but it was Jags who looked the shakiest. How many were demanding our Captain be dropped before the game?

It's always going to be difficult when you're relying on Steven Naismith and Arouna Kone as your main link players. When whichever one of them plays has an absolute stinker, it makes the whole team look absolutely terrible. Hopefully we won't be relying on them all season.

The best pressure in sport is scoreboard pressure. Go up 1/0 at home and any game changes.
Manager needs to stop bottling it and go for wins at home against everyone.

Good teams forget the past failures. It's all about the next game. If we are to genuinely be a threat for those top 4 teams, then we will beat Arsenal. Hard task, seemingly impossible, but our players and the manager need to step it up next week. Under Roberto Martinez, i have a strange feeling that we will.

so you are advocating a second striker (Naismith or Kone) rather than a'winger' then?
Deulofeu did nothing again when he was on, bring him on earlier or starting him would have only given him a greater time period in which to do nothing. ManU didn't give him the time or space.

I just look at the massive gap of pitch between Lukaku and the two DCM and the slowness of our passing and think we are easy to set up against. When they are higher up the pitch AND we move the ball fast it is fine but when they are too deep AND the passing is slow we are easy pickings. That said if we had pulled back to 1-2 as we should and Jags not got an assist for their third it might have been different. It has been an ok start but we have dropped too many points vs our competitors for my liking now.

Deulofeu has created many goals this year. Mirallas needs to play. He isn't going to get game time and fitness sitting on the bench and is probably our best player when in form.
Naismith shouldn't be starting any game for the Everton Football Club.

He's left me confused more than anything. He got it wrong today, and he has to take the blame for that. He's also got it right a fair few times this season too, and we've done well considering the tough opening fixture list.

What I don't understand is his team selections, and today in particular, it was just such a negative first XI. It was as if he set up not to lose it, which really goes against everything I thought he stood for. There was so little craft and guile out there today, we never going to create more than a couple of token chances in 90 minutes. Del was poor in the Derby but so what, the kid is young and he'll improve, what is playing Naismith out wide going to do? Bit bemused that he never players two wingers either.

It's not the best teams that he has to prove we're better at handling this season, we usually do well against the best teams.

It's the weaker teams in the division who will come and play deep and counter us, if we're to progress then we have to put these teams to bed.

November/December will be interesting.
Chico with a rare bit of sensibility here...

Spot on tho

The issue for me is I watch sides like Leicester and Palace rip defences open with pace and direct play on the flanks and im sat thinking how we could do the same (but better) with Mirallas and Deloufeu out wide.

It's frustrating how he's handicapping this teams potential with insisting on playing Naismith and to an extent Kone out wide. Those sides mentioned are above us despite us having the far better players, massively frustrating.

and yet we can easily defeat Chelsea handicapped in such a way. How odd.
