But with Moyes method, we wouldn't have won anything if he was here for the next 10 years mate, I'm not one of those who prefer 6th over an F.A cup mate.

It isn't a binary option though is it.

In fact finishing lower in the league will lessen the chances of us winning any cups as we'll lose the ability to pay wages and attract players.

Yes. Football is about winning games. You set out to draw, you've got a good chance of losing, the best form of defence is offence, pick whichever you like, but we got a fair few draws this year because we didn't press on to kill games off.

But that evidently isn't true.

Moyes approach gathers more points, scores more goals and lets in fewer than every other manager with a remotely similar budget.

At least he says what he honestly thinks though, and doesn't just follow the club line like others. I don't always agree with him but I've got more respect for him for not being another club yes man.

This. No BS from Southall and he is the only ex-player that actually thinks like a fan. I have all the time in the world for him. Shame he couldn't be employed at Everton because its a certainty he wouldn't last 5 minutes because he says it how he sees it.

But it looks almost inevitable that we'll have a defender as our number 2, which is the best possible scenario for Martinez coming in. It should, in theory, allow our back line to maintain its solidity whilst Martinez improves our attacking which has been lacking, we've never scored enough goals.

Martinez with Neville or Weir as his number two would be spot on.

While there is merit in what what you're saying, I'm sure there were defensive coaches at other clubs where Martinez has worked.

I sincerely hope he does well for us, and he's a bright guy, so he could adapt his approach. That's what I'll be hoping for at least. We all fear risk and uncertainty, I'm just inclined to be in the camp of the other two coaches who've been short listed. I'd rather see Martinez go away and prove himself, but my main concern is he left Swansea stating he couldn't move them forwards and he'd done all he could, and then left Wigan after getting them relegated. We're a club that likes to give managers time, but what if he buggers off because he can't be assed anymore?

But doesn't win anything. He hasn't got the X-Factor. If he does not win anything at Man Utd in his first 2 seasons then that will be failure of the highest order. He has seiously got to change his mindset at Man Utd or he will be hounded out. Thats how I see it.

Yes & sometime bored us to death with his negativity of trying to defend a 1-0 lead - his tactical subs & the lack of youth in the team was also a problem in 11 years this is the best side this year he has produced we could have made the top 4 with a bit of adventure!

Seriously if you think Moyes didn't win anything due to his 'methods', I'm not sure how valid your opinions are on football. I'm pretty certain that a large proportion of members of this forum would cite his lack of finances as being his number one reason for not winning anything, possibly his lack of youth development as being a second.

Arguing against a manager who's teams lack of form seemed to run parallel with not having depth in his squad to replace injuries, or players out of form, of having poor methods seems to wreak of someone who can't see the obvious.

You seem to give more arguments against having Martinez than you do for having him  And you're in his camp!

I guess we lost 3-0 at home to Wigan because of our lack of finances.

The thing is mate, Moyes might have had the 14th or 15th most money to spend, but he had the 5th or 6th best team in the country.

Now that's down to him, and fair play to him.

But that league form that had us overperforming didn't carry onto the cups. The teams that beat us in those cups were very rarely the teams that outspent us (though Chelsea and Arsenal knocked us out a few times, tbf) but often it was teams like reading or wigan or leeds or oldham or dinamo bucharest or a dalglish Liverpool team who were in their worst run of form in a decade, who we were better then.

That team, regardless of how much it cost to assemble, under performed in cups compared to how it did in the league.

Since 2006 no team who we outspent ever finished above us in the league. In the same time period, 5 teams with a smaller budget have done better in cups.

I honestly think that goes down to Moyes and his mentality.
