The thing is mate, Moyes might have had the 14th or 15th most money to spend, but he had the 5th or 6th best team in the country.

Now that's down to him, and fair play to him.

But that league form that had us overperforming didn't carry onto the cups. The teams that beat us in those cups were very rarely the teams that outspent us (though Chelsea and Arsenal knocked us out a few times, tbf) but often it was teams like reading or wigan or leeds or oldham or dinamo bucharest or a dalglish Liverpool team who were in their worst run of form in a decade, who we were better then.

That team, regardless of how much it cost to assemble, under performed in cups compared to how it did in the league.

Since 2006 no team who we outspent ever finished above us in the league. In the same time period, 5 teams with a smaller budget have done better in cups.

I honestly think that goes down to Moyes and his mentality.

You've got some good points there in fairness. Moyes did prioritise the league in my opinion. He did get to a final though, but we were totally battered by Chelsea in that final.

I'd say more down to Moyes' big game mentality and team selection.

He didn't always bottle it in big games, and unfortunately I think Wigan probably went into most players heads as being a given. They simply didn't turn up and then paid for it at the end of the game, which in fairness we almost got away with.

Martinez didn't pull a master stroke that day, we were really diabolical.

Chelsea game wasn't his fault. We were missing half our squad and down to the bare bones vs one of the best teams in europe. Never going to win.

the two norwich games sum up how protecting something too much can easily lead to disaster, cant see wenger, saf, or even benitez or avb sitting back and going uber negative with subs vs that calibre of team with a carthorse up front

I didn't blame the defeat against Chelsea in the final on Moyes, totally agree with you about your reasons for us losing that day.

The unfortunate thing for Moyes during his tenure at the club has been he's never had a team with strength in all positions, with the exception of this season. And when he's finally had a good balanced 11, he's simply had no one to replace out of form or injured players with.

I'd argue that Moyes biggest weakness has been his lack of youth development. His tag as being a manager that encourages youth baffles me, I think his PR team have pulled a blinder there.

You can see why tho, when we did ok in the Europa we earned around 500k, I think we got around 1m for getting to the Cup Final, clearly my figures are a little off, but the difference in League postions is HUGE and for a Club such as ours, when every single penny counts, its a MASSIVE factor.

Now clearly we could have won these games, theres no excuse for getting beat by Leeds, no excuse for getting destroyed by Wigan, but on both occasions, the teams we put out were more than good enough to beat those teams.

I understand it a little bit, its all about the weeks training prior to these games, the team talks, the mentality going into those games, but as I said, the teams we put out have always been good enough to get results, we did we lose these games? We blame 1 man for these defeats, when in reality there are always 11 players in blue who escape any blame.

I get that results are always down to Manager, but theres only so much he can do, once those players step over that white line, its on them.

Honestly can't remember many big games we've won. United 04/05 was a rarity when we actually turned up, and Fiorentina 2nd leg. Struggling apart from those two.

Any youth thats been good enough has had a good run, its not a myth, Jack Rodwell played over 100 games before his 21st Birthday, Wayne Rooney around 80 before he was 18, the only PR is from fans, who clamour for these young lads, who lets face it, see out their careers at Tranmere and Oldham.

Seems like Everton have spoken to Martinez, realised he's clueless, and now we are going to be stuck with him. #wafc

Tweet by a Wigan fan. Got to laugh!

I must have imagined Man city this season, Spurs in December, and Man U in August......

There's a reason why teams who spend big finish above you, for a club that has a low spend like ours, anytime you beat a team that out spends you, you've won a big game.

We're not suddenly going to start hammering Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U, Man City, Spurs etc simply because we have an attacking Martinez at the helm. Neither would we with Vitor or Ralf, that's just fantasy world.

Do I think we're more likely to concede more defeats with a different manager to Martinez, absolutely. But lets not kid our selves into thinking we'll suddenly have the attacking capabilities of Barcelona because we'll be playing 3-4-3
