I think in his first season he lost

Valencia £16,000,000
Cattermole £6,000,000

He signed

Gomez £1,700,000
Scotland £2,000,000
Moses £2,500,000
Caldwell £500,000
McCarthy £1,200,000

What is it you like about Martinez Hilga?

I like that he has experience having total control over two clubs with limited budgets. I think what he did at Swansea is a parallel to what Moyes did at Preston, taking them from midtable league 1 to top half of the championship. At Wigan he made the best of a bad situation where he had to cut the budget, was learning on the job, and most players wanted to leave the club the first time another club approaches. He is also like Moyes with his progressive approach to statistics and analysis in football.

As much as it gets made fun of I also like his demeanor and relationship with players/fans/media. Also his style of play in big games.

I also like that he is young and will get better, and I think he will want to stay around for a relatively long time.

I have to laugh how people call Moyes to defensive but then when the chance of signing an attacking manager comes across he's to attacking.

Fairly good signings there for a club of Wigan's stature, with good re-sale value.

You know what?

NEA about Martinez now. If he comes I am at peace with that. However, I need to know who the other two are.

I genuinely don't think there are any others mate. Think its SKY trying to get a bit of money on people guessing who they are and betting before they have to pay out on Martinez.

Lets be honest, Martinez's record at Wigan is bad. His defensive organization at wigan is truly terrible as the stats prove and ultimately its ended with him taking them down over his 4 yrs in charge.

Now are we hiring based on that??
Were Wigan correct hiring him in the first place??
And what were they wanting from him??

Firstly, when Wigan hired him they clearly wanted a whole new direction at the club. They wanted to curb the spending, half the spending on wages, implement a youth system and change the whole style of play. Big ask for a club like Wigan if your wanting to stay in the PL at the same time. You would have to say he's succeeded on all those things apart from staying in the PL. Wigan are in a better posistion as a club than when he joined off the field.

IMO he was the incorrect appointment for Wigan UNLESS your accepting relegation is a major risk making all those changes, other things havnt helped him along the way, (injuries selling players) but I think it was always invietable with Martinez in charge and the changes they were trying to make. David moyes and efc did it a different way. Moyes didn't care for our style whatsoever the first 5 yrs whilst building a side from the back that was hard to beat. However efc had a lot of advantages over Wigan in regards to wages, attracting players ect.

Clearly we not looking to hire him based on his ability to keep a team in the PL and rebuild a team from scratch. That's not needed here. The youth set up is already in place. IMO from our point of view, his appointment will be based on being a manager who like moyes is very dedicated, loyal to his employer, wants to run club from bottom to top, knows the transfer market and has an excellent knowledge of football. His changing of the style of play with quality players in place will be a lot more of a smoother transition here than at Wigan.

So to summerise I think if Wigan wanted stay in the PL at all costs, Martinez was the wrong appointment for them at that time. If they wanted to change there club he's done that but at the cost of relegation.

For us it's different circumstances he's coming into. He'll give the board everything they want from a moyes type loyal manager. We won't go down even if he fooks up, but his changes will be a lot easier here to implement than at Wigan.

Get behind him, could end up very well, he's young and will have great back room staff to assist him. His next move was always going to be the big test...at least in affect he rejected L'pool for us!! Ha..
