Wigan HAD to win that game, he had to commit players forward. I wouldn’t say Walcott shredded them either. Wigan were the better side until Mcmanaman went off injured. The goals were largely individual errors in that particular game.
Wigan played at Goodison twice last season and were arguably the better side on both occasions.
I’m not advocating Martinez, Laudrup has been my first choice throughout. But I think it’s unfair to judge him based on selected games with inferior players. I think that EB article actually has quotes from Roberto saying that he’s adapted his style to suit the players at his previous clubs, which I think we both agree is the best approach. People constantly give out this 29% win percentage, which is purely his Wigan one when it’s much higher if you include his Swansea days. A counter may be that Swansea were in a different league etc. so does that mean Vitor’s is 0%? Not saying you, but Vitor seems to be first choice with a lot on these boards and hardly anyone knows anything about him. I’ve spoken to 3 Portuguese people (all Sporting fans) and they don’t really rate him. They say as long as he beats Benfica they’ll win the league and he’s been quite lucky in achieving that so far. The real test for managers at Porto is Europe and he’s failed there.
Has our GD really been that good under Moyes. Maybe I need to go back and check the stats, I always think of us as a marginal side, who tend to finish with a low GD for our placing, due to 1 goal swings in most of the games.
As you say we’ll find out soon enough. I’m just looking forward to a different approach. For all the faults and people picking it apart, I actually like the positive approach to life that Martinez brings as opposed to the negative attitude that Moyes would often give off. If you were a player at Everton would you welcome the new manager coming in who favours positivity and attacking football. Who doesn’t hang his strikers out to dry but instead will try to find the positives in your performance, or would you want the manager who had his best attacking player back defending in his own area for large parts of the game? You could argue the same for the defenders, ‘Jags, hit the front man!’ or ‘Jags, pass and move!’ as a footballer I know which approach I’d prefer.
I agree with most of this, don't think Moyes hangs his strikers out to dry though, when they are s**t he says it, but generally I think he backs them to a fault.
How many games did Saha and Jelavic get to try and get their form back for example?
Also think you massively under sell just how good our football has been, we dominate possession in most games and play some lovely football, hoof ball, direct ball dependent on the circumstances under Moyes.
I like this though..
I think that EB article actually has quotes from Roberto saying that he’s adapted his style to suit the players at his previous clubs, which I think we both agree is the best approach...
Thats great news. Also the EB mentioned how high up they were against Arsenal if I remember rightly.
And I also dissagree wbout Walcott, he ran past them with ease on many occasions in that game because they defended too highly.
As for the rest I completely agree... It will be nice to see more attacking football, more positivity, more going for the win when we are behind, I also wanted Laudrup but won't mind Martinez, and I also think the win ratio is a red herring.
I am not slating the guy, just concerned he's going to go all out attack and lose us games with a high pressing line that's innapropriate.. Sometimes it's exactly what's needed of course, but if there is evidence he changes with the team I am more than happy with that.
+15 GD by the way, Liverpool got 28 (nearly all Suarez), the next one down from us in terms of GD is -4. Everyone who got a better GD spent vast sums of money. Everyone else is at least 19 goals away from us.
