Finishing 6th or 7th rather than mid table more often than not means over the season we've won more games. So those that are saying it makes little difference can do one. It makes a BIG difference to me.

I agree with you regarding Malaga, historically not as big a club as Everton, and not as much potential. However, a side who was within 2 minutes of the champions league Semi Final would be considered a step up.

Juande Ramos was bottom of the table with a decent spurs side when he was sacked, not quite relegation but still pretty bad. His next appointment was madrid.

Hiring a manager like Martinez, who has shown to be just as effective at treading water in the league, but much more effective at winning important games / winning a cup, does not necessarily show a lack of ambition
