Yeah, that would have been a great option. Or even just the bottom half. Pick a great moment in the season with Roberto and the players. Then it doesn't come off as Dictatorial, but I still don't hate it as is...it just could have been handled much better.

Maybe something with the shadows of great teams past on the edges while the current squad/Martinez take center stage.

Yeah. I don't mind it like, and I think its a great idea to have a mural there, but I think the portrait cultivates the idea of a cult of personality, when we are so much more than that.

I think it's main flaw is that it was obviously going to cause the uproar that it did. It's not hard to see why that it has.

It just would have been smarter to soften the mural with people other than Martinez. Whether it be past legends (although then it looks like we're comparing) or current first team.

One look at that picture and you already have the words "Absolutelty, Phenomenal, Winning and Ethic" rolling round your head. Imagine what opposition players and supporters will think.

Its all about making Goodison a fortress, something we all should rallying round to do.

Got to be more than just the London factor though, them being in London wouldn't particularly matter to US fans with no plans to ever attend a game for example.

There is a massive Jewish community in the US. Could be something to do with it.

2 - Is it a little strange given our history to give such praise after 1 year? yes.
3 - Is Moyes probably proper fuming. yes.
4 - Do i think some sort of montage of great moments from last season (including a boss pic of Roberto) may be better? yes.

All that being said...
Has Martinez been wonderful for this club so far? yes.
Do I want him to stay a long time and realize CL with this young team he is building? Absolutely.

So all that really matters to me is if Martinez is ok with it (and I have to assume he is). In which case it can be seen as the club doubling down on him and I'm ok with that. Let's make him feel loved and wanted so when the CL royalty come calling, he wants to stay with us... his CL team.

Nah. It's all down to three things:
1) Bill Simmons picked them as his club in '06 and had a massive readership of college kids
2) One of the main reasons he gave - low bandwagon potential
3) They do a great job getting their name out, like the NBC Sports commercial last year.
London was another factor, as it's a destination city, so he could see the club on a vacation his wife/kids could enjoy.

Basically, he liked them because they're us, but in London. (His second choice was Liverpool, so his judgement is anything but sound...he said Gerrard was the most likable footballer in the Prem).

You remember that NBC spot? They kept comparing the Big Clubs to the Dallas Cowboys? The Dallas Cowboys as known as 'America's Team'. They're just about the most hated club in the US. Loads of Americans hate favorites and prefer small local teams with history and dignity and a 'blue collar work ethic'. Spurs are selling that. We're not. Thus they have a greater support base here. But even with zero help form the club Everton are getting a bunch of American supporters, which proves the market exists.
