Nah. It's all down to three things:
1) Bill Simmons picked them as his club in '06 and had a massive readership of college kids
2) One of the main reasons he gave - low bandwagon potential
3) They do a great job getting their name out, like the NBC Sports commercial last year.
London was another factor, as it's a destination city, so he could see the club on a vacation his wife/kids could enjoy.
Basically, he liked them because they're us, but in London. (His second choice was Liverpool, so his judgement is anything but sound...he said Gerrard was the most likable footballer in the Prem).
You remember that NBC spot? They kept comparing the Big Clubs to the Dallas Cowboys? The Dallas Cowboys as known as 'America's Team'. They're just about the most hated club in the US. Loads of Americans hate favorites and prefer small local teams with history and dignity and a 'blue collar work ethic'. Spurs are selling that. We're not. Thus they have a greater support base here. But even with zero help form the club Everton are getting a bunch of American supporters, which proves the market exists.
