8.5 m difference in league money alone plus qualification to Europa (which is a route into Champions league) and you consider them the same?

The points you make above are relevant to the here and now, but historically 5th place has always been considered a mid-table position. They had to bring in the play offs in the lower leagues so that mid-table teams had something to fight for.

No one was ever like this under moyes - and once with him we had one point out of 8!. You've grown sated with expectation. We ha two amazing runs last seasonwhere we got lucky several times (last minute winners and equalisers against Cardiff, Stoke, arsenal, villa, united) it only stands to reason we'd have a bad spell. We've played 4 of the big 5 already, 2 of them away, and it's just October. And we've got half our first team squad missing.Jog on

This just isn't true, at all. There were loads calling for Moyes' head at the start of the 2005/06 season, the season after he had secured a 4th placed finish, and he continued to experience pressure, vilification and ridicule during all of the other periods in which his team was performing badly.

To say Moyes was immune from criticism during his tenure is just totally false and inaccurate.

this exactly, we have played most of the games which we are likely to drop points in in our first 7 games. The only really 'bad' results have been palace and arsenal.

If you want to call 5th place midtable which you define as "a term used to describe a team that isn't competing with the elite" that is up to you, think you are wrong both on the mathematics and Everton matching your definition.

Last year I remember us competing damn well the "elite" - City, the eventual winners, were the only team to beat us home and away.

Moyes has often been criticised, never denying that (that 3-0 loss to Wigan in the cup...) but I don't remember as many people going crazy in 05-06. Maybe it's the rose tinted specs.

I mean the first season i watched in full was 1997-8 so I have a very low baseline!

He's clueless and laughable and undoing all the hard-work Moyes done in getting us to a top5/6 club. Completely fluked last season. Taking us back to the dark days of Walter. Catalan bin lord.

LOL at people doubting Roberto. I've got 100% faith in him. He's playing footy the right way, and sure as hell it worked better than everyone expected last year, but it shouldn't be used as a stick to beat him with this year now we've got key players out and struggling.

We need a bigger squad with better depth, simple as.
