Romelu Lukaku

Towards the end of las season I was resigned to Rom going either in summer or next summer simply because we could still command a good fee for him. And, given his rhetoric in the media about moving on etc, he was starting to annoy me (even though I still rated him despite some flaws to his game). Then Koeman gets appointed and there's talk of a new contract. And then at start of season Rom starts scoring again. Things looked rosier. But now, he doesn't seem bothered again and has gone off the boil. Why does this happen? I don't know. Its just Evertons luck I suppose. Can't see him being offered a new contract or signing one if he was offered one. At his very best he could be a hit for a top team. But, he's not consistent enough.

Exactly.
This is what happened in the last game of Belgium (under Martinez, dare I say it). Midfielders were in close proximity to him and running past him. He was great that game in holding the ball and flicking it to running midfielders. This is what he can d really well (apart from scoring goals).

What he cannot do well is control a (very) long ball and keep it until one of the midfielders comes along.

If we play forward with running midfielders who are close to him, and not at least 25 meters away, he would create opportunities for the midfielders to score. But now we are talking about running AND scoring midfielders. We should be glad to have a midfielder who runs OR scores.
Who was that against?

If he could have those games against strong sides he'd have a better chance of getting the type of move he wants. Shearer and Lineker were laughing at him at half-time when Belgium played Italy in the summer.

There is an article today stating Lukaku needs to run more and here are the stats. Lukaku is averaging 5.4miles per 90 mins with 40.4 sprints.

Sanchez is 5.9m with 58.8 sprints
Aguero is 6.1m with 54.9 sprints
Costa is 6.2m with 65.9 sprints
Firmino is 7.1 with 79.9 sprints

Goes on to state

"Consider this: so far this season, he has been on the pitch for 1,017 minutes. Liverpool's Roberto Firmino has played 1,067 minutes.

In that time, Firmino has run 23.6 miles further than Lukaku and made 490 more high intensity sprints. The difference is colossal.

He wants to play at a Champions League club but it's the same with Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez and even Sergio Aguero.

They are all running further and harder than Lukaku"

Na....if it was Mirallas, Geri or Ross they would have hooked at half time. Waste of space at the moment.Needs to buck up his ways ...and fast.

while I agree he needs to put more effort in, we are in no way playing to his strengths. He needs support and the other attackers aren't helping him out.

That being said, it lies with the manager to try and change that.

they are completely different types of players

it's like comparing apples and oranges

Yes they are built differently, Rom is never going to be a marathon runner but these stats show he's not working hard enough - in particular the sprints (more so than the miles covered).
