Romelu Lukaku

Because it's Everton, they're masters at snatching defeat from victory. Stadium announcement week? No, news breaks we may lose our best player. Pure Everton.

It's a shame tbf, Everton needs to step up. Who leaks the news that he was about to sign? Why didn't the club keep this news in house? Did lukaku and his agent go against the club wishes.

This should have been leaked at the end of the season rather then bringing the mood down now as we chase for Europe.

I'm not overly worried.

It seems him signing a contract would have met absolutely nothing in terms of deterring outside interest or him being up for a move. I can't reeeaaaally blame him for wanting to be playing in the Champions League - as much as I would love him to stay put here for another five years to see if he can get it with Everton, but there's absolutely no incentive for him to do that.

I don't think Lukaku leaving completely cripples the club or ruins the plan we're on. It will be tough to replace his goals, but not impossible. It will probably take a few players, each offering something different, rather than one straight replacement.

What does suck is the timing of this news, and the ride he and his agent have taken us on. None of this is Everton's fault, they haven't said a thing about all this. It's been all Raiola and now Lukaku making us look stupid. But once the frustration and embarrassment pass, we'll get on with it. He'll keep scoring this season as he'll want the golden boot, so we should be able to finish the season strong. Then let the silliness begin.

Be funny like if he scores the goals at Old Trafford that ultimately cost United getting into the top 4 - wonder how he'd spin leaving for United as matching his CL playing ambitions then - when they'd have only qualified once in the last 4 seasons...

Ultimately, the hope is that we try being clever with the contract, release clause not activated till summer 2018, and give him a release clause of 70m, lowered to 60m if we qualify for the CL - give the bugger a huge incentive if he wants to leave that badly.

If/when he does leave, i don't think he will ever be regarded as important as he was here though, and seeing him struggling badly if he moved to the likes of a Bayern, Chelsea, United etc wouldn't shock me. Better players (or players rated very highly at the time they first had that 'big move' have made those moves and found themselves regretting it.

Lineker - never as good as he was with us
Owen - became a bit part player after leaving the rs
Anelka - same - just became a player who bounced around - never as good as he was at Arsenal IMO
Llorente - flopped at Juve after being brilliant in Spain
Negredo and Soldado - both came with big reputations - both failed ultimately and now ones art Boro ...
Rush - played second fiddle to Laudrup and was basically a total flop in Italy
Hughes - never the success at barca that he was at United.
Torres, Shevchenko and lots of other strikers who they seem to specialise in turning into flops
Falcao at both United and Chelsea.

Christ just look at the likes of Benteke, Bony and a few others for how the wrong move can wreck a players career in effect.

He will go like, but there is as much chance that in 3-4 years time he is getting talked about as a bust after leaving us as there is of being talked up as one of the best around. Hell after back to back very good scoring seasons - Chelsea and Mourinho still sold him without much afterthought, and not one other club was willing to go near the price we paid.

Their is also a list just as big of players doing well after a big move.

Your point is still a good one though.

Made me laugh that because it's true to an extent but I don't think we can link the 2 things. Looking at things realistically, Lukaku has given us 4 years now and in 2 of them (after a promising season in 5th), we've failed miserably on the pitch, and this season we are back to square one with 7th being fairly common under Moyes. Unfortunately we cannot match Lukaku's ambitions, but the club has offered him a reported £140,000 a week. What more can they do?

Regarding the Stadium announcement, that will happen soon enough. Just because our fans are desperate to hear something, and made up dates get passed around doesn't change anything that is going on behind the scenes.

From everything I have heard, I think the Stadium sounds like it is making progress, and the next announcement we will get will purely be to confirm that the location is Bramley Moore Dock, but there is loads of other stuff to sort out before we can make any sort of other announcement. They will have an idea of Stadium Size, but probably won't want to reveal anything at this stage.

He'll go do a huge fee, to a club where his achievements and comparasions won't be against Ferguson or Andy Johnson mate, he'll be expected to be as good as or better than the likes of Drogba, Lewandosky, Suarez, van nisterloy etc. It's a while different level of pressure and expectation that will be on him, the record of him for us against the big teams and his record in big tournaments for Belgium suggest he struggles in that situation, and he did fail at Chelsea even after two seasons of scoring in this leauge
