Romelu Lukaku

...absolutely, plus our wide players never pushed their full backs the other way leaving them to put pressure on our back four. All of our offensive players were poor in the home Derby yet everybody highlights Gareth Barry. To get anything at the weekend everybody needs to put in a shift and we'll have to accept desicions are unlikely to go our way.

Yeah it was a poor performance.

Thats said I think we are totally a different proposition these days. Koeman was still feeling out the squad back then and we seem a lot more expansive now.

Hopefully we don't go back into our shells at the thought of facing the RS, they really are not that good.

But it's pointless if he doesn't have support.

What we didn't do in the home derby (in the second half, anyway) was get enough players up close to him.

If we get Kev and/or Ross around Rom, then it makes his job a hell of a lot easier.

He needs to help get those players around him though. It's part of his job.

You are seemingly just looking at it like he's an isolated part of the team with a completely different role to the other 10 players. The reality is he should be part of the whole offensive system.

He's been better at it in recent weeks, but you can't pre-emptively absolve Lukaku of blame in the derby if we don't have an outball and can't mount an attack.

Spot on Tubey!! Making the ball stick is the first phase of players getting around him, although he has improved a lot with this side of his game over the last few months..

Lukaku thrives being a target man - especially for Belgium where he has runners past him (Hazard, Mertens)

For Everton... not yet.

If we play the back 3 your suggesting mate - then we will be playing so deep that Lukaku will have zero support and will be utterly isolated - the game will involve us punting it long to him hoping he can do something all by himself

Not at all.

The back three as a system naturally forces the wing-backs to push up.

What is key is the midfield. They have to have the energy to plug the gaps.

Totally agree and his hold-up and all-round play has drastically improved this season.

My point is the lad gets lots of stick from us for it (rightly so sometimes) but if you actually watch most other strikers in the league who are known for their hold-up play (Kane, Costa etc) they always have more players around them to pick up the scraps.

I'm not absolving him of blame at all. He has to play well as they all do.

bloody hell their midfield is absolutely crap, we should be able to put out Gemmill and Pembridge and be able to manage the little they've got in the engine room.

Where they are dangerous is up top so because they press and move positions a lot. Defensively we need to be absolutely bang on the money but midfield v midfield, they should be worried about what we can do to hurt them and not the other way round.

But that back 3 against a team with movement and with the pace of Mane - will not be able to push up, meaning either the midfield has to sit really deep or the team becomes disjointed badly and we will en dup under pressure and just having to punt it long and hope to a isolated Lukaku mate

a back 3 of Jagielka williams and Mori playing pushed up with the fullbacks pushed high up will be absolutely bummed as they will be forced to defend in space mate and Jagielka isn't capable of that anymore against a decent level player
