Romelu Lukaku

We might lose money selling him next summer instead of this one but prices inflate every year so might not lose out as much as you think in terms of the actual fee.

No one ever, ever, ever is spending £100m on him. No chance.
United paid £90m for Pogba.

Lukaku is a couple of months younger, counts as a home-grown player (as does Pogba, apparently) and plays a position where the top players cost more. He is slightly better than a 1 in 3 international goalscorer (20 goals in 56 games) and virtually a 1 in 2 prem goalscorer ( 84 goals in 171 appearances for Everton and West Brom - I haven't included the 10 appearances he made for Chelsea).

In the prem, only Ibrahimovic, Kane and Augero are comparable to Lukaku, and there is no chance in hell of any of them signing for us, whether we sell Rom or not. How much do you think Spurs would demand for Kane, if City, United or Chelsea came knocking? £80m minimum, right? And Rom is less injury prone, provides more assists and scores more goals in open play than Kane... despite Kane having the better midfield supplying him.

£100m for Rom is a more reasonable fee than £90m for Pogba. I'm not saying we'll GET £100m, but if we sell him for anything under £70m then the buyer is getting an absolute bargain.

I wonder if this is the club playing hardball with Rom? "We'll slap a £100M price tag on your head......or you can sign this new contract which has a £70-80M release clause in it". In other words, sign the contract with a more reasonable release fee in it, or we'll price you out of a move this summer.
It would make pretty good business sense.

Was wondering this, but wouldn't he just sign it and leave straight away for £20m less?

Can't see why people elsewhere are saying £100m is "staggering" though, surely it's not a million miles away from his market value all things considered?
Not necessarily, it would still need someone to offer that amount. It would prevent him running his contract down and leaving on the cheap if he signed. He won't sign and he will leave next summer for about £50million, because no-one is interested at the value we place on him hence no bids last summer. It would seem that he is not considered in the elite bracket of the likes of Suarez, Bale, Nymar and Pogba (despite the latter being fairly average at ManUtd this season) so clubs are not interested for elite money. He will get a club at the £50 million mark though and the only way we will accept such a low fee is if he is at the end of a contract. This is just IMO!

Not saying he's not worth it in today's market but no one is giving Everton £100m for one of their players.

He has improved since last summer, as he has done every season since he went on loan to WBA. The fact that no-one went for him in summer 2016 does not mean no-one will want him in summer 2017 or summer 2018, because each team's situation changes over those time periods and the player himself may well keep improving. For instance, if Utd don't qualify for Europe then Ibrahimovic will probably leave, so they would be MORE likely to be interested in Lukaku; if they DO qualify for Europe, Ibra will stay with them so they will be less likely to go for Rom.

The mere fact that teams are sniffing around him demonstrates:

a) teams are looking for strikers
b) Rom has improved this season (as he has done every previous season)

and these two things combined help to drive up his value.

Juve were in a power play with the Higuain deal and how much Pogba talk was going on in the press. They literally HAD to buy him for the fans to stay on side and they could just whack that dumb price tag on him.
So let's see how the summer plays out. If Costa goes, Chelsea will have to buy a striker... If Ibrahimovic goes, Utd will have to buy a striker... If Kane leaves Spurs, they will have to buy a striker. If any of these situations unfold the club concerned will have to buy a striker to keep their fans onside... the prem's top scorer would be a prize acquisition in those circumstances, and the club concerned will pay through the nose.

If no-one needs him, then we keep him. Double his wages with a contract extension that includes a £80m release clause. He won't turn down a pay rise that big at the end of the summer, when no-one has moved for him at £100m. Sorry but Moshiri and Koeman are handling this very, very well.

I know they are, we're doing it right, not disputing that. Simply saying I personally can't see anyone shifting £100m to us this summer and hopefully I'm proven right :)

People whining about the 100m price tag, throwing their toys out the pram
It's like they want to sell him

No it's just being realistic that no one will pay the asking price so what's the point in keeping a player who doesn't want to be here another season to finish 5-7th and lose about £40 odd million when we sell him the season after for relative pittance when that £40 million could sign us 1-2 quality players.

With or without Rom next season we'll finish around 5-7th just means we'll only win some games 2-1 instead of 3-1/4-1. Would rather start the inevitable rebuild now and let Koeman bring in players for the long term who want to be here ala Spurs than drag this sideshow on.

If Utd don't qualify for Europe why would Rom go to them when he has stated he wants CL football. Agree with point a) and b) but there are only a small number of teams in Europe who can afford the price tag probably - Man Utd, Chelsea, City, (Arsenal if they changed their spending policy), Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, PSG, or a Chinese club. So it's more a case of how much do any of those clubs want or need him? A deal over £90 million would make him the most expensive player EVER. Andrea Belotti, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bas Dost would probably all cost less and have similar scoring records this season and Belotti is the same age. Lukaku is worth £75 million + to Everton, I am just not sure many other clubs will feel the same or have the resources to meet that valuation. Lukaku wants to play CL, another season here to try and qualify with the back up plan of being in his last 12 months if we fail to and therefore being more affordable to more CL clubs seems like a sensible option for him (and he is not daft). Neither would this be a disaster for Everton.
