Romelu Lukaku

He plays with legitimately world-class players at international level, and it's fair to say that the Belgian fans are not impressed with the results.

Did you watch him at the last World Cup and Euros?
I watched some of the games yes, considering the managers he has had at international level though and one of them proved here that no matter the quality of the players, if the team doesn't play right then it backfires. If he was managed by a good manager there for once then perhaps internationally would carry a little bit more weight as a argument.

When you consider not only is the quality of players much lower here to a top team, but tactically he is asked to do a role which essentially leaves him isolated for much of a game means he can't do what he does best. Go back and wath any game we leave him 20 yards away from anyone else for example, the derbies are normally good examples. Do you think that giving him support on the level of a top team would have him looking so ineffective? Perhaps if a long ball to an isolated striker had someone else for him to play it to afterwards, then there would be more rhyme and reason to playing that way.

I get the argument of what his limitations are and that is fine, i just question writing him off that some do because he can't hold the ball up for the entire team for example. He scores goals, and scores quite a few of them, if the rest of the team was set up to support him then perhaps he could be more effective up on his own. For far too long the person who is meant to be supporting lukaku is the one hitting the 30 yard pass to him in the first place.

A part of the Belgian supporters just doesn't like him (maybe because he played for the rival of their team? racism?) and wait for something to go wrong. They're actually booing him sometimes, which I find rather repulsive for a national team.
A more normal part of the supporters see that he's improving and that in that team as well the stats are becoming pretty impressive. He has now scored 23 goals (20 official 'cause the FIFA doesn't recognize the friendly against Luxemburg). Which may not look impressive, but it is for a country like Belgium. It makes him 7 best scorer all times already. With 8 more goals he's the best scorer for Belgium ever.

I'm just going to have come to terms with people telling me that a lad who often struggles to get a ball under control or take it in his stride is the best player in the league.

I firmly believe that he'll find life difficult at a team where players are routinely ragged off and dropped if they're not up to standard; although to be honest, I'm expecting him to still be here next season anyway.

Who do you think the racists would prefer? Benteke? Origi?

Wow, can't believe you called the Belgian fans racist.

Just wow.

Said this in an earlier post about he will struggle in a so called bigger team.. other managers would drop him and then I'd like to see how he would react. He knows he won't get dropped here as we have no-one else.

As I've said before we should build a team around him and play to his strengths... but at the moment we don't have the right type of players.

There is also a small part of me that kinda wants him gone as he's starting to infect other players with his champions league stuff.. like Barkley.. . He had never said this before and suddenly now he is. It's like lukaku is unsettling some other players.

will be playing against his potential suitors on sunday

wonder whether he will turn up

Hope not. That would be the final nail in the coffin. I could Imagine a pisd off Abramovich after the game demanding his toy to be returned to him.

They aren't racist; last time I checked Batshuayi, Benteke and Origi are just as black as him. They perceive him as lazy and sometimes get frustrated by his bouncy shins. It also doesn't help that he is a bit arrogant and the other three are not. Most Belgians don't like arrogance and if he doesn't perform to what they are expecting (and the level he's proclaiming to possess) then you get that.

This being said he is the only one who gets stick from time to time and I very much dislike booing. Also his level of play is improving during the last games.

Lets be honest unless your Belgian and go the internationals you won't know why Lukaku is booed.. Stop pretending to know

That's a strange statement I am from Belgium and I go to some of the international games but you don't need to be or do any of these things to know why he is booed. People write whole articles about why he is being booed for the national team. Also they regularly discuss the issue in football programs like extra-time ... . One of many articles https://www.voetbalkrant.com/nl/nie...-uitgefloten-veel-landen-dromen-van-zon-spits (also notice the poll; 1 fifth finds the criticism he gets is justified ). No wonder it gets discussed a lot since he's the only one who gets booed regularly.

That link explains it quite clearly.

I am a Belgian and I go to the internationals :bye::bye:
My impression is that the main reason is that he played for Anderlecht, so the Club Brugge and Standard fans hate him.
He used to bully them for fun you know..

Get with the program Carl, the lads going for a world record fee in the summer. Apparently.
