Romelu Lukaku

In 1985 we bought a player who scored 40 goals for us that season and sold a player who worked hard, not for himself but for the team. We were the best team in the country if not Europe at the time and what happened. We had the most heartbreaking season in our history. The following season we sold the goal machine and won the title again sharing the goals amongst the team. Football is and always will be a team game. It's not about individuals.
We sold Alan Ball mate.
The best player in the country.

That's interesting

I read a stat the other day that in 4 years playing together, Ross has assisted Rom 5 times in total, which is obviously far less impressive.

But again, there will be many instances were Barkley has gave Lukaku a ball to feet and nothing has come from it. The blame doesn't solely lie on Barkley - the problem is actually obvious; Barkley wants to stick a ball to feet, Lukaku wants it over the shoulder.

We can only build a team around one of them, as they don't work together.

I'd never really thought of it like that

You're right that Ross rarely plays the ball in behind the defence and Rom is always looking for that ball

Hmmmmmmm

That's why everything breaks down in attack. You have a playmaker who wants to get the team up the field by making it stick in the final third, but a striker who has no interest in that and wants to spin the last man and grab goals.

It's a toss up as to what you prefer, but we've never played to either players strength consistently.

My view is that people seriously overrate Lukaku and underrate Barkley. For example, people criticise Barkley for holding the ball too long; yet if you look off the ball when he has it there's absolutely nobody showing for the ball to feet, basically ever. So he eventually turns round, looks to start again and can be dispossessed on occasion.

Yet there's still an intelligence and thought to what he's doing. I can't remember the game, but he was on the right touchline and held the ball instead of releasing it, and there was a groan around the entire ground. Then he strung together about six passes across the pitch and set up a beautiful goal, shutting everyone up.

Top sides play with that possession football in mind - looking to prod and probe, find gaps, utilise clever movement to drag players out of position. Barkley is made for that; Lukaku really isn't. And that's not just me saying it - Meulensteen, Redknapp and numerous others have seen the exact same flaws and pointed out that top clubs can't tolerate the risk Lukaku is.

Should never happen. If he doesn't sign an extension this summer he should leave ASAP. Rom will refuse to any deals unless it is dirt cheap(say 25-30mil) in summer 2018 so he can milk every possible money out of his next destination. Why in the world would he give up that 30-40mil signing bonus he can get from a random club 6 months later once he signs under Bosman? If I were in position to sign Rom under Bosman, I would rather shell out that kind of cash to agent and Rom instead strengthen Everton. And use it as a bargain power to lower his salary.

If Rom is to be sold in July 2018 for 60mil, he would be lucky to get signing bonus worth 5mil or so and may get a contract worth 150k a year(~7.5mil a year). If Rom refuses to go and decide to honor his remaining contract, coming Jan 1, 2019 he can sign w/ any team in the world as a free agent. Meaning he can get at least 30mil instant cash as teams need not to pay a single £ to Everton. I don't think him and Raiola will give up that fat pay check coming next year if he still stays in Everton and has only "6" months to qualify for Bosman.

Pogba and Raiola received 50mil from ManU. Guess how much Rom and Raiola can make Jan 1st 2019 as a free agent.
