Romelu Lukaku

So can I... but maybe not just yet. It may be different under Zidane, of course, but if Benzema leaves, I think their first port of call will be Aguero or perhaps even Lewandowski.

If Rom bags 30 this season though and tears up the Euros, it may be a different story. But our valuation if so will be in excess of £50mil, which means that it narrows it down to clubs who would pay that money:

- United
- City
- Chelsea (they could pay that, but would they take that hit?)
- Real
- Barca
- PSG

Bayern rarely spend that big and would only need a forward if Lewandowski left. PSG have the spending power but it depends whether Rom would want to take the step down in quality in terms of the league he plays in, but then be guaranteed a huge wage and Champions League.

I reckon he will get 30 this year. And be boss at the euros.

So.....

...we'll just have to get Lewandowski to replace him!

United will be in for him in the Summer I feel. They have nobody.

Hmm. Not quite sure how you can be so confident.

He's 22 years old, his value can only increase. He's got the leading role in a team recognised as playing some of the best football in the world's most popular league. He's likely to finish the season as top scorer with 30 or more goals.

He's part of a team that might win silverware this year, might on the evidence of last night finish much higher up the league. He's playing for a manager that has build his entire game plan around him.

On top there's the prospect of new owners and significant investment (one would hope).

So much going for Lukaku at Everton. If we continue to develop there's no reason to leave.

It all comes down to this doesn't it for Everton's immediate and long term future? And it needs to happen real quick.

All true. And in fact I acknowledged all this when you posted it before.

But do you truly believe that should we finish similar to last season (God forbid!), and blow both cups and yet he's still scored about 30, and a huge team, let's say Real Madrid who may well be after a striker in the summer, that he won't go?

It'd be a huge sum of money of course.

This. We shouldn't make him captain just to keep him - also makes the club look weak, like Man Utd with Rooney.

To be fair I don't think the suggestion is to make him captain just to keep him.

The suggestion is he'd probably do a good job as a leader for us. I'm not convinced like but can see where @The Esk is coming from.

I think he's too young to be captain just yet, but you can see he has the character to be one day. He's very demanding of those around him - in a good way - but sometimes I think that natural selfishness that comes with being a goalscorer can limit the efficacy of a striker being a leader of ten other men on the pitch, which is why it's overwhelmingly defenders who tend to wear the armband.

There's something really interesting in what Martinez is trying to cultivate, though. You have Rom, who fumes any time he isn't given the perfect pass; Geri, furious with Barkley for missing a chance he set up; and Besic, last night kicking off at himself for over-running the ball (and remember the way he went over to hug Stones during the Spurs game after he got stick for trying to play it out of the box?): evidently, leaders all over the pitch is what Martinez wants.
