Just thinking on about Rom, last night he celebrated his goals with full fervour against his former club, he didn't last time he scored for us against them....................think he is truly ours now

The fist pumping was mostly relief from being so utterly terrible the previous game(s). The 2nd was from the emotion from being 2 down and turning it around.

I wouldn't call him average.. as the stats don't lie and his goals record is certainly up there.. especially for a lad his age.

But to a certain extent I agree, with his size and power he should be the spearhead of our attacks. Should be pinning defenders. Turning them. Laying it off. Holding it up. If he could do that.. imagine how often he could get Barkley into dangerous areas.

And for me.. there really is no excuses for it. Hes had 2years+ at the top level playing week in week out. Our defenders control a ball better than him. Hell I'd even argue I could.

Needs to be addressed for sure. You can't always play a ball for him to run onto.

This is a very good point. Neville on Monday Night Football was showing how United's new 19yr old striker Martial (who is much smaller height and size wise than Lukaku) was able to hold the ball up and spin away from the likes Kaboul and O'Shea, highlighting how important this is to help aid the team into transitioning into the final third of the pitch.

What does my nugget in is watching Lukaku continuously getting beat in the air when competing for balls with his back to goal in midfield. He never seems to have the height in his jump or the strength to hold off much smaller players, Naismith wins more headers outside of the box than Rom does.

I am saying that people slate him because he doesnt produce his top game week in week out.

People expect him to be unplayable, ten out of ten all the time. No one can be.

His best is so much better than previous strikers best.
People have a right to slate him. He is either very decent (rare) or very ineffective (quite often). There is no in between and so that's the gripe many people have. I think the criticism he gets is justified because of this very reason. He can't control a bag of cement, doesn't move and looks disinterested for games at a time and then produces a touch of class out of no where. Its unrealistic to believe he can produce the class every minute of every game but it should be addressed as to why its so infrequent with him. I wouldn't be surprised if he was drug tested after the game last night as his 1st and 2nd half displays were night and day.

Its all very strange.

Lukaku can be very instrumental in winning us games, like last night, and then he can't finish, eg. against Swansea and we only draw. His control/trapping of the ball leaves a lot to be desired. Frustrates me no end.

I think people use that sort of generalisation about a lot of players. It's not true though.

I've seen him have loads of 'meh' games where he's done alright but not really shone. I thought Chelsea and City this season were two examples of that, he did ok in both without ever really hitting the heights.

If he carries on at the rate he's going he'll get 20+ league goals this year. To be honest he could be a bag of cement for all I care if he manages that.

I don't know why he doesn't just try and trap it like he did last night for the 2nd goal.

Back to goal, got his foot right on it to kill the ball and instantly gave himself the time to turn and run with it. It's when he tries to trap it with his instep he turns into a Brett Angel.

Frustrating and Glorious in equal measure for me, but the boy can slot and they cost dollar and are few and far between.

Roms shape and build probably don't help "he's got a good touch for a big guy" quote tend to be because most big fella's don't have a great touch due to their size and weight.
And since he's such a big fella, every bad control looks even worse and clumsier than it is.

The things he does well he's very close to being top drawer at, finishing, using his body to shield the ball and create space or retain possession. I think he has good vision and knows how to create space for himself.

He doesn't impose himself physically as much as he should or win any headers, which is shocking for his size though.

I think his link up play and touch has been improved this season, not sure why people are giving him such a hard time on it, although it was woeful last season.

I think he's a great player with the ability to become world class if he improves on parts of his game. He's a player that scares opposition defences and for all his faults and he can frustrate at times I'm really glad we've got him because even when he's not playing well he can still put it in the back of the net.
