Romelu Lukaku

Because it's fascinating in terms of how people view him as a footballer. Take away the fact he played for us and it'd still be fascinating - the difference between people who think he's actually world class and those who think he found his level here, or honestly at West Brom.

It highlights a distinct difference in how people view football. I see those who rate Lukaku extremely highly as having a very simplistic 'Roy of the Rovers' understanding of how football works, whereas they in turn will see me in thinking he's mediocre as not understanding how important goals are in the modern game.

It's natural for people to talk about him. He's a polarising figure in terms of his ability.
Or we understand that not all footballers are great at everything. This is a very condescending view to have Tubey, and it makes you look like a giant douche (I mean this in a loving way of course because I like you as a poster). I appreciate a skilled footballer, but I can also see some of the class that Lukaku has. He can struggle against a man-mark which is a fair criticism. Give him time and space though, and he will punish you.

Lukaku has always struck me as a player who doesn't quite have the right attitude (currently) to reach his potential.

Quite a few forwards have been like that over the years (Anelka & Adebayor stand out), and I think you have to really be prepared to sacrifice your lifestyle to your profession to reach that level.

I don't think Mourinho really cultivates personal development.
This is another thing that sticks out a bit to me. He is definitely letting his supporters get to him.

Why? Because he's scored his second goal in his last seven appearances and against a team who are seventeenth in the league.

I'm certainly now in the Rom is a awful player camp, in fact I always an advocate of him here, but recently he's been way off the boil.

The football hipsters won't allow him any credit.

Yeah he's been in a poor run of form as you rightly say.

A poor run by his standards...

Top class player, and at 24 - potentially world class. That's why he's leading the line at Man Utd now.

"We'll be better without Lukaku" said the Evertonian football hipsters. We'll have more movement up front, someone who can hold the ball up etc etc etc.

lol

Nope, you missed bolding the 'extremely' bit - you at least acknowledge his faults, whereas some on here think he's actually world class.

Those that do... sorry, but they do have a very simplistic view of football; one of 'goals = good' and 'he's there to score goals lol'; his glaring weaknesses don't even matter to these people.

Inconvenient but true.

Fair enough. You have to acknowledge he is only 24 and is surely ahead of the curb for now, whatever you think of him as a player. He could do with a tuning in attitude and mentality though.

Hadn't noticed his entire record as I was referring to his Premier League record, whereby in his last seven appearances he's scored two.

By his standards, at this level and for the team he plays for, I do feel that's not what he is capable of - hence being off the boil.

But scoring against the likes of Derby and Yeovil can easily bump the figures I guess...

Nah, Wayne's your litmus test when it comes to that kind of measurement and Rom's nowhere near where Wayne was at, at 24. Rom's good, but he's now suffering from an over-reliance on his physical size when he was younger. There's certain parts of his game he obviously never had to spend time on because he was just dominating his peers because of his physical attributes.

For me, Rom's game (and I go back to this once in a while) is that time he tore off down the wing against Vidic and shouldered him to the turf. I don't wanna' say it's too late for him but, if you want to make the most of him, he's got to be in a true counter-attacking side. Basically, he should be across the park.

Nail. On. Head.

It's less depressing in here than matchday thread at moment.
