Romelu Lukaku

He must be the most unimpressive 'world-class' player ever.

Who is more impressive as a wold-class striker playing currently in the Prem? Rom's not the best, but I struggle to name more than 5 who are better. Being among the top 5 strikers in the Prem is impressive. A consistent rate of 1-in-2 plus a healthy amount of assists is impressive.

His goal to game ratio has always been strong, which rightfully should be applauded, but there are certainly better 'round' or 'impressive' forwards in peoples' eyes.

For a multitude of reasons, Rom simply doesn't and will not portray an image compared to the likes of Kane, Aguero or even Salah - no matter how hard he tries.

He'd undoubtedly walk into most, if not all, Premier League teams yet he has particular personal and playing flaws that make it hard for people to adhere to him.

Just look at his record while playing for us yet many of our fan base never really took to him, while others had underlying doubts; the same is happening at Manure.

Agree with all that, and those 3 strikers you named have a case of being 'above' him. But that still makes him among the top 5 in the Prem. And that's a Prem so monied that the top clubs can almost buy anyone in the world.

Well, how do you define striker? Do you mean forward players generally, or lads who play up top on their own? Because Kane, Sterling, Aguero, Vardy and the RS front 3 are far better attacking players than Rom. Making the box smaller and saying he's one of the best lone strikers just narrows the field to a few names anyway

hiya prev!

goalscoring centre-forward...i like Vardy but I'd prefer Rom in my team. Sterling's not a striker. who are the other RS? you mean wingers or attacking mids? different position/role that. i'm talking classic strikers. who else is better than Rom in the Prem?

Indeed. It actually emphasises the point that he's a relic in the modern game, where you have fluid attacking systems.

You stick Lukaku in Liverpool's front three and they're suddenly ten times worse, for example.

I understand people will think the following sentence silly because they only see his goalscoring stats and nothing else, but here goes - Lukaku would not get a game at Everton ahead of our first choice front three of Richarlison, Walcott and Tosun. He'd get on the bench ahead of Niasse as a plan B, but that's it.

For Lukaku to play at Everton right now, Silva would have to change his entire managerial approach to accommodate him. That's how stark his lack of technique and influence on a game is.

United have Sanchez to track back and help out, lukaku i there to score goals which he does.

He will be in the top 20 premier league goalscorers of all time this season and he is only 25.

I'm not disputing any of that and if you have a peruse over my previous posts on GOT, you'll see that I routinely advocated that he does his principle job well.

My point was that for one reason or another, Rom will never get the admiration other players may get because of his perceived style of play, flaws and his persona.

Rightly or wrongly, he simply isn't a player than a fair percentage of fans will love or give full credit to, and that hampers their overall judgements of him.

I meant impressive as in how he makes you feel as a spectator. World-class players don't consistently struggle to control the ball or take it in stride, and it isn't a given that attacks will break down with them as soon as they're tasked with doing anything more complicated than barging someone over and getting a shot off.

He'll always do enough against lesser opponents to have a respectable goal record, but the fact that he's only hit 20+ league goals once in his career shows how even that side of his game is partly overblown.

I also feel that he simply doesn't convey the flair or electricity that we often associate with world class players. Yes he's a very reliable and capable finisher...

However, the likes of Aguero ooze ability and keep you on the edge of your seat as you anticipate some form of magic; their agility and persona only add to this.

I highly rate Rom as a finisher and genuinely think he'll score where ever he goes, but I do feel that perhaps he can sometimes be his own worse enemy.

He will never be a world class player as he simply doesn't have the other elements required and his perceived persona only helps alienate him further from fans.

Yet he's certainly a very good player, will continue to be one and undoubtedly the best finisher we've had in many a year - that'll be as far as it goes though.

It's nice to be able to have a nuanced discussion about him now that he's out of the Everton bubble.

In some ways, I think he's done incredibly well to go as far as he has in spite of the glaring deficiencies in his game. There can't be many midfielders or forwards with worse technical attributes that have been sold for more than £10-20m, and yet he's had upwards of £100m spent on him at the age of 25. The issue now is that once Mourinho leaves and is replaced by what will almost certainly be a more progressive manager, Lukaku's wage demands will make it difficult to find another club that both can and will match what United are currently paying.

He'd have been fine back when everyone played with two out-and-out strikers, and would subsequently have three or four first team options on the books at any given time, but in the current climate he's going to struggle to find someone to pay top whack for a player who is simply a non-factor at the business end of major competitions.

I think he'll end up in Turkey sooner rather than later.
