Will Everton boss Ronald Koeman utilise this winning formation this season?
New Everton boss has enjoyed success at Feyenoord and Southampton using a line-up that caused a stir in Holland

Over the next six games Ronald Koeman’s thinking for Everton should begin to emerge.

The Blues head to Barnsley on Saturday for the first official friendly of the summer and kick-off a congested fixture list before the Premier League opener in August.

During this run, Koeman will tinker and tweak, experiment and use the games with MK Dons, Dresden and others as exercises of trial and error.

But should Everton supporters expect at least one formation to already be seen as a Koeman blueprint for the new season.

At the beginning of the 2013-14 season, as the manager began to plot Feyenoord’s route back into the Champions League, he decided on a formation that would cause a stir.

It would, in many ways, be seen as not very Dutch.

In a number of games, Koeman would ditch the idea of playing a 4-4-2 formation or setting up his side in an attacking 4-3-3 line-up.

In big games, often away from home or against title chasing rivals, he adopted a 3-5-2/5-3-2 formation.

It proved so successful that only did Feyenoord (who picked up significant wins over Groningen and PSV using it) finished second that season but it was a tactic used by Louis van Gaal in the 2014 World Cup.

Holland famously picked defending champions Spain apart in their opening group match with three members of Koeman’s squad in the starting line-up.

Defenders Bruno Martins Indi, Daryl Janmaat and Stefan de Vrij all played in the win, with Feyenoord team-mates Terence Kongolo and Jordy Clasie also used in the tournament.

Koeman brought those same tactics with him to Southampton and implemented them in games with Chelsea and Man City.

But how would this work at Everton?

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman would comfortably fill the roles of attacking full-backs, although Koeman is understood to want to provide the Blues’ right-back with competition for his place.

But who would fill the three centre-half positions?

John Stones wants to leave Goodison and Koeman is fighting Chelsea to land Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly as his replacement.

Stones’ departure would leave Phil Jagielka, Ramiro Funes Mori and his replacement as senior centre-halves in the squad.

But would Koeman want to add another? Or has the new Blues boss seen enough in young defenders Brendan Galloway, Mason Holgate and Matthew Pennington to convince him not to move further into the transfer market?

Mason Holgate (L) and Brendan Galloway might get their chance?
Galloway and Holgate played the full 90 minutes against FK Jablonec last weekend (Pennington didn’t feature) and are sure to play against Barnsley on Saturday.

And with a squad, missing only Romelu Lukaku, at Koeman’s disposal if he sees fit, perhaps fans will start to see the first glimpses of the new manager’s thinking.

But 3-5-2 is sure to be part of it.

No its still Aids, its the formation, its used in teams that dont know how to defend and teams that want to force their full backs to bomb on.

Koeman should teach us the defendings and play with wingers or I will be calling for his head by October.

I give him until the end of August. If it's season over at that time, like the last 2 seasons were, then he can go...
