Ronald Koeman discussion

I'm worried that he'll tinker come the Derby with Jags out and put Barry back in as captain either for Mccarthy or Barkley. Really hope not though Barry's days should be over after Tuesday.

People have been writing Gaz Baz off for years, at some point he will done, but not yet.

On the other hand I wouldn't want him near the starting 11 in a Derby game now or against anyone we will need to outwork . Father times caught up with him and skilled though he us now looking like those reactions have tipped over a lot.

Barry is class, and key to us beating sides who will come to Goodison to sit back and pack the defence.

However, the other day proved that we need more energy to play in the high tempo games - I don't think Koeman will be picking him for the derby but I do expect him to be in the squad.

Heres the thing though mate, and seriously go through the last 3 seasons (including this one) at Goodsion, how many teams have we actually beat at home who have sat back - maybe that gives you the answer that Barry isn't really doing what you reckon he's vital for.

As for when he plays we play at a much lower tempo, isn't that exactly the reason we actually struggle to open up any team that does park the bus so to speak, Barry sets the tempo when he plays and in large part that is why we can look very one paced at times - the tempo is too slow when he plays to have an Arsenal type performance from the other day, and it's too slow in games when we need to be trying to open up a team as well, by the time we are looking to play that final ball - teams have 11 men behind it and theirs no space.

He is a case of a player who individually looks good still for the most part, but whose presence in the team has an overall negative impact on the rest.

Ideally now he should be used to sure a game up when we are ahead for the last 20-30 minutes

I agree with your conclusion, but i'd argue that we struggle to break teams down at home because of the lack of movement in front of Barry, rather than him slowing the tempo down. He moves the ball quicker than any player in the squad I think.

The biggest problem Barry presents is he is dropping deeper and deeper to compensate for his lack of pace. This drags the whole team back 10 yards and we struggle to pass our way up the field.

Your posts about Barry are a good one. Barry was a fantastic footballer, and the fact that given his legs have gone he has been our best midfielder for 3 years says it all. However I continue to see Barry as something of a sticking plaster to our problems, as opposed to providing a cure. He covers for people who don't track back, or give the ball away cheaply, or get out of position etc. If people did their jobs I do think it nullifies his role.

The 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1 whatever we played on Tuesday is the formation that suits us best, and suits most of our players better, but it doesn't suit Barry. For the last 2-3 years we have inadvertently built the team around Barry, by playing a style that negated his weaknesses. He has been a great asset in that time, and in all honesty is one of the few that can hold their head up high last season. He's clearly a man of integrity and he hasn't played badly this season, but we need to start developing a team that gets the best out of Lukaku and Barkley.

Tuesday night gave Koeman a message and an indication of how to play, even if we stumbled upon it. The question is whether he is brave enough to take the good fortune and run with it. Barry will still play games this season, but it would be madness to break up our midfield 3 for the Derby.

In no way does his presence have a negative impact mate.

But he shouldn't be a guaranteed starter.

I think that's a bit harsh.

Yes there was more dynamism on Tuesday night and no, Barry should not start on Monday but come on, he has been one of our better players this season and still has a role to play, albeit hopefully limited given his advancing years.
