Memphis Depay remains a target for Everton

Everton expect a busy transfer window, but Ronald Koeman admits he faces a challenge to convince prime targets to snub the Champions League and head to Goodison Park.

Manchester United’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay are realistic possibilities and Koeman would like as many as five additions in January.

Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk was top of his wanted list last summer, but now Manchester City are showing interest it is an example of how the finances of others can still overshadow the Merseyside club, despite the backing of Farhad Moshiri.

“We need to show as Everton that it’s really an interesting project. But once again, if you have the competition against those kinds of team then it’s always difficult,” said Koeman.

“If you pay 10, they pay you 20. Players like Van Dijk? OK. All players have a lot of ambition and like to play to get into the Champions League. Players want to be involved in the Champions League.

Everton continue to be linked with a move for Morgan Schneiderlin
“I was a player myself. If I was playing in Holland and I play for Southampton and I can choose between Manchester City and Everton then of course, if you can, you make the step.” Koeman has made no secret of the fact he wants to transform the Everton squad, injecting younger blood and more physicality into the side.

“If I compare to when I was in Southampton. I like to do more business now in January than we did in Southampton,” he said.

“But that’s all about what we need. We will lose Idrissa Gueye to the African Nations Cup. We have a long-term injury in [Yannick] Bolasie.

“We have the physical problems with injuries of James McCarthy and we know Gareth Barry cannot play games every two or three days.

“We have Phil Jagielka in a tough period, with a lot to think about what’s the best eleven and what’s the most fresh eleven players.” One cause for optimism is Director of Football Steve Walsh has been working on targets for the last six months, Everton hoping his extensive contacts will have the same impact on Merseyside as it did at Leicester.

Walsh’s recommendation to sign Gueye has already reaped dividends, and Koeman feels the club is in a stronger position to act in the next window than during the frantic summer when both he and Walsh had just joined the club.

“We are better prepared now than it was in the summer,” said Koeman.

“We had more time now for January than we had in the summer. Steve is in for a few months, new people in, new scouting.

“You need always time to see the qualities in the squad. You need to learn about the characters in the team.”
