Ronald Koeman discussion

Right subs at the right times today - got it spot on.

We were awful 1st half but we cant blame Koeman for 10 yard passes going astray or players mis controling the ball, thats down ro the players. Better 2nd half

Still have an issue with the quality of football we play (bar short bits at the end of matches) as I watch the game for enjoyment not just winning. But credit to Koeman, didn't expect us to get 6 points out of the last three matches.

Also think his recent use of academy players is encouraging.

Feels like he is doing the groundwork to me. Like building a house. All the grim, but important bits are done first, foundations, services being connected, then you move on to the bits that people see and appreciate, like facings and paintwork.

Maybe Davis and Ross, cameos notwithstanding, were the first signs of a paint pot being opened. Certainly felt fresher.

And almost a very creditable seven points from nine but for a 96th minute goal in the derby

But all in all a decent points haul over the festive period, albeit today was tedious in the extreme during the first half :)

Yep.

Its still Big Sam/Tony Pulis level.

Also think the academy kids are purely last roll of the dice efforts who will be back on the bench at the end of Jan.

I guess we will see, you could be right or you could argue that he was giving the older players a decent chance to claim the spots and now is giving the youngsters an opportunity in the areas he isn't satisfied.

Whatever it is, I do enjoy seeing academy lads come through into a team. I know a lot of supporters just care about the result and there is nothing wrong with that but personally I'd find it difficult to happily support a team made up of a bunch of mid-age mercenaries even if they were successful.

Breaking into the top 6 is going to be a real challenge for this season. Man Utd seem to be finding their feet and the top 4 I think will stay as it as now. Tottenham are probably the weakest of the 6 but even then, 6th over 7th isn't a huge step in terms of qualification, though it potentially means an extra Europa spot. It's a way to go yet and the January window could change things up but would we be satisfied with 6th and Europa?

Martinez set us so far back, breaking that top 6 is an unfair expectation. The only chance we have is if one or two of them have a season that's that bad they sack their manager like when Moyes and AVB got sacked a couple of years ago.

Its all if buts and maybes.

But United, whilst putting a good run together, seem to have become pretty reliant on Zlat, and also seem one knock away from having a crap defence again. Spurs I agree, meh. RS? Look good at times, but not that convinced they have the stones to stay at that. The Firminio news today suggests an issue there, for example.

Arse, nailed on top 4. City and Chelsea too. Will we get into it? I doubt it, until we see the players we end up with on Feb 1st anyrate, but it aint the closed shop that some would suggest.

And we are 7th. Playing pretty average, to be kind.

If we finish in the top half, bring through a few young players and bring in 3/4 then we will have progressed. Let us not get carried away and place unrealistic expectations on ourselves.
