At this stage last season, when nearly every member of this forum was baying for Martinez's blood, we had 27 points and we were still in the FA cup (we got knocked out in the Semi). We are currently on 30 points and out of both cups. RK gets time, but I don't see much progress. Here's hoping!!
There isn't much progress, that much is clear. Martinez was on the edge at that point, and Everton fans being Everton fans, we craved a trophy. So, as long as we were still in with a shout that season he was getting a stay execution. I'm sure you'll recall that by the time we got to the Semi final, it was vurtually win or bust for Martinez. And so it proved.
The obvious difference is that this is Koemans first season. He's been here 6 months. Whilst I'm as concerned as the next fan, with the best will in the world, he's surely going to be given at least until this time next year to put his stamp on it.
Incidentally, in Martinez's 2nd season we went out of both cups very early too. That middle season of his 3 years certainly turned the tide against him. I wanted him to succeed because of that 1st season, but it couldn't carry on. In the end, he had to go.
Koeman hasn't done the business yet, but for me, there's a massive re-build needed. I agree that he hasn't managed to get this squad dancing to his tune, but comments about this squad finishing 5th (3 seasons ago) are way off beam. 3 years older (not good for those over 30 yrs old), plus competitors improving beyond us too.
As you say, here's hoping. I'm giving it a watching brief on Koeman though. This time next year it will be his team. If he's not doing it, he'll be struggling for sure.
