Ronald Koeman discussion

Why did you keep banging on his first season while completely ignore 11th and 12th, 75 league games? You are like a propaganda machine of RM, making like he was some kind of success here in fact he is/was a terrible manager and took the club backwards after Moyes had gone.
I can only think Davek is winding you up.

At this stage last season, when nearly every member of this forum was baying for Martinez's blood, we had 27 points and we were still in the FA cup (we got knocked out in the Semi). We are currently on 30 points and out of both cups. RK gets time, but I don't see much progress. Here's hoping!!

Playing the devil's advocate here, but is it either fair or reliable to judge Koeman's performance after a mere six months in charge?

Many, including myself, judged Martinez after a year and we were filled with optimism and hope for the future and look how that eventually ended.

Obviously back to the real world here and justly there are questions and concerns, but my point is that Koeman should be given a period of time.

I evaluate it all as it goes along, right through his tenure, as I would with any manager.

There's very little to be positive about.

Plenty were doubting their ability. A lot were doubting their attitude. Expectations were raised after the season we finished fifth but that's been proven to be an outlier in hindsight. The squad is limited and has been overrated for a long time.

I think Barkley is a good analogy for where we are at. Has the ability to hold their own in isolation but lack the consistency to be truly great.

We have a couple of very good players but no excellent players.

And their ability to retain possession hasn't necessarily fallen off (the gueye sitter and build up from the other week being an example of the team playing football). It's just not something they are asked to do as much. We play more direct nowadays.

A style of play that you could argue is much more efficient in this league.
So we're going to have to settle for a route one game and hand this manager a free pass to hand in excuse after excuse until some indefinite point in the future when he finds his feet?

What a future.

I don't have to believe it, it was quite obvious that what he did.

No embarrassment missing it tho Dutch, you can look for it in future. Managers target certain competitions, that's football.

no he didnt im sure we played a full team at anfield a few days before the cup semi to utd how is that targeting the cups

He had to go because we could contrive to lose a game from any position and our defence was a joke. I'm not denying we play turgid rubbish a lot of the time now but we aren't keystone cops bad.
We aren't keystone cops bad but just yesterday we were defeated from a goal up in three minutes of defensive ineptitude?

What am I missing here?

I'm being told these players are the problem, but last season and the beginning of this season they weren't the problem at all were they? Now because Koe-moan can't get his act together some of his apologists are telling us that it IS the players to blame.

Sorry, not having that.

You always play your best team in the Derby, always.

Before we reached the semi final we always played with our best team. You really think he said to the players' ok boys just relax in the league but in the cup we're gving 110%'..........wake up it doesnt work like that in professional football.

There isn't much progress, that much is clear. Martinez was on the edge at that point, and Everton fans being Everton fans, we craved a trophy. So, as long as we were still in with a shout that season he was getting a stay execution. I'm sure you'll recall that by the time we got to the Semi final, it was vurtually win or bust for Martinez. And so it proved.
The obvious difference is that this is Koemans first season. He's been here 6 months. Whilst I'm as concerned as the next fan, with the best will in the world, he's surely going to be given at least until this time next year to put his stamp on it.
Incidentally, in Martinez's 2nd season we went out of both cups very early too. That middle season of his 3 years certainly turned the tide against him. I wanted him to succeed because of that 1st season, but it couldn't carry on. In the end, he had to go.
Koeman hasn't done the business yet, but for me, there's a massive re-build needed. I agree that he hasn't managed to get this squad dancing to his tune, but comments about this squad finishing 5th (3 seasons ago) are way off beam. 3 years older (not good for those over 30 yrs old), plus competitors improving beyond us too.
As you say, here's hoping. I'm giving it a watching brief on Koeman though. This time next year it will be his team. If he's not doing it, he'll be struggling for sure.

RK...what time?...6 months? RM got time 3 seasons and took us backwards.

RM took 18 points from his last 18 matches what was the point of saying at this stage last season we got 27 and in the cup. It did not matter when you get knocked out of the cup. If you don't win it then it is pointness, semi or whatever.
