Ronald Koeman discussion

Koeman still has a lot to prove in my book, our defence is better for sure and we have taken points from most of the top sides but can't help feel we have been lucky in those games that they haven't taken the chances where perhaps on another day they would have scored.

The performances have been in the most part awful and we haven't had one game yet where we have played the full 90 minutes. The early cup exits have been frustrating.

However we are 7th and haven't played well, so if with a few more player acquisitions and we do hit some form that could be interesting. I'm not one for public bashing of players but perhaps it's the only way to get through to them nowadays when they hold all the cards, so I will let him off for that, for now at least.

Within the next year or so he will have almost his own team, at that point then we can judge him properly. I just hope we start playing better towards the end of the season to give us all confidence for the next one.

doesn't explain in the slightest why the players rolled over and showed absolutely no fight though, does a possession game stop a player being physical when not on the ball or getting stuck in.

As for them letting us have the ball - think he remembers that wrong as the rs had 67% possession

For a local lad though Osman never once showed any kind of fight in a derby anyway

I wasn't defending the players rolling over under Bobby. Just made reference to that derby debacle at Anfield and pointed the obvious flaw of Bobby's stubborness.

Back to topic, I think players have no excuse to roll over no matter how hard/soft the manager is. Under bobby, they knew they wouldn't get a stick for whatever new pile of crap they put on show. Under Koeman, its different and better. They'll get booted out if they do so. However, I am not convinced with Koeman motivational skills yet. Is he willing to dig deep with a player and unlock his potential or is he gonna let them go after a season of under par performance just cos he knows he has money?

You'd imagine he'll take the path of least resistance. In the past, that was squeezing every last drop out of a player. Now, we can afford to cut our losses.

I don't think anyone would blame him for that. No sense wasting energy on a couple of players that might not have what it takes to improve.

I thought this thread was about Koeman though?
The current manager will always have comparisons drawn between him and his predecessor. It's just the way it is. Moyes regularly got dragged (and still sometimes still does) into discussions over the pros and cons of Martinez. Hell even Walter Smith was always brought up in the early days of Moyes (mainly just to point out how much better Moyes was).

I maintain that it's far too early to judge him, good piece in the Grauniad about his plans and intentions, in a nutshell it will only be his team after the summer. I like the fact he talks straight, it's a refreshing change from the bluff and guff of Martinez and he strikes me as a man with genuine ambition, not happy to play the plucky underdog, something that has plagued us for 20 years. I've no more idea than anyone else in terms of how it will play out, but I'm happy to back him while he's building.

If we got another couple of signings in before Feb 1, it would increase the pressure on Koeman to put together a convincing sequence of results and performances.

At the moment, there are far too many holes in the squad to be able to think that things won't continue in more-or-less the same fashion that we have seen since August, and well before that.

Koeman's position seems to be that "nothing is good enough until (nearly) everything is good enough". If he is genuine in wanting to be the manager that presides over a significant upturn in our fortunes, and is prepared to stay to achieve that and use transfer windows to put pressure on for signings, then who would not support him?

On the other hand, I do think that in his time with us so far, he has been rather less pragmatic than I would have wanted. Saying some players in the squad have no future here is the sort of comment that has most folk applauding his honesty and drive to improve, but we'll still have to rely on at least some of the no-hopers for the rest of the season.

Yeah, and if those no hopers want to prove him wrong or earn good contracts elsewhere they'll have to perform.

I agree with the last two posts. Koeman needs to bring in his own players before we can be too critical about him. People were complaining about him going to the press after the cup game, but we got Schneiderlin in.
We all know we have players on our books who are robbing a wage. I have no problem with Koeman acknowledging that.
If he can get another 1/2 in during this window and a few in during next summer then next season will be a proper test for him.
I certainly don't like the football we play at the moment, I don't like the inconsistency but I do like being in the top half of the league.
I'm hoping they style of football will improve when he has his own type of players in and that will bring consistency.
I think today could be a big test for us, this last week has shown that Koeman a wants change in attitude, he has brought a couple in and moved a couple on, hopefully the players on the pitch today will respond and look lime they want a future at Goodison.
