Ronald Koeman discussion

If 7th is unacceptable this season, then 7th was unacceptable last year, and the year before. So please accept this David or I'm going to have to call you out.
He said seventh isn't acceptable next season and I think his point is that Koeman's getting paid a lot more and we've got a billionaire funding increasing transfer spending which previous managers didn't have. Now at the minute I think the jury is still out on increasing transfer revenue but if we have a big net spend this season and in the summer then I think it's a fair point.

But your saying the seasons over and we can't catch the top six, even thought we have 48 points left to play for and 5 of the 6 still play. Make your mind up
I'm not saying that. I'm saying I cant see it happening. But if it did I'd be unmoved by it because my suspicion is that when it means something in the first half of next season whatever decent form they manage in the last 16 games this season will be very difficult for this group of players to reproduce...which is where a manager comes into the equaltion: his coaching of players he acquired and the purchases he makes - can he get on top of that bottling mentality?

Got to stay Davek is spot on about us suddenly playing well with zero pressure on us

It's been happening since Moyes

So it's nothing to do with a new manager coming in, assessing his squad and making the changes necessary for things to improve? Also as previously said, improving fitness levels, changing the formation or bringing more youthful legs into the set up.

erm......ok ;)

Agreed.
You would hope though that with a sweeping of the decks and real competition for places, their will be no room for shrinking violets going forward.

Takes time to change a 20 year mentality both on and off the pitch.
Look at the anxiety at Man City as an example when they first started to achieve things.

Not really I think his point is that Koeman's getting paid a lot more and we've got a billionaire funding increasing transfer spending which previous managers didn't have. If there's significant imvestment in the summer, then of course he'd be fair in that assessment.

But this year it's just nonsense to suggest we've not massively improved, and that's without significant spending. We're looking like an Everton team again, and foundations are being made. The hysteria and revisionism is astounding.

I cant even fathom what your point is, tbh. If you had one it long since expired. Can you restate your case, please?

You have continually said 'we are everton. Only titles and cups will do'.

Now you are saying that minimum expectation is sixth/seventh.

Quite the climb down.

No one is saying this season, it's next season and thereafter (if he's still here).

Just settling back for 7th place in the future and saying 'well that's as good as it gets I suppose" just isn't on. It wasn't for Moyes and it wasn't for Martinez...and it defo wont be for a man being backed by a billionaire.

The reasons why the squad suddenly looks much improved are fairly simple; he's found a formation that limits the weaknesses of numerous players, and he's sold or banished a lot of the "too old, too crap never good enough" lot and in the main replaced them with youthful exuberance and energy (which again masks some of the deficiencies).

There's still a lot in the squad who will be shipped out over this window and next. No doubt about that at all.

That's right. A cup should always be the aim each season, why not? On the title question: ULTIMATELY how can winning it again not be our objective, given our history?

Short/medium term I've stated my view:

this season 7th is acceptable. A decent enough start.
next season 7th is not acceptable. we have to improve on any such 7th place finish this season.
third season achieving 5th or a top 4 spot can only be seen as a finish that keeps Koeman in a job

That ^^^ is just about as clear (and fair and even handed) as I can be.

Koeman took over a sinking ship with with no morale.fight or fitness in them. It took a little while but we are now seeing vast improvement in all those areas. I'm not one for stats but we seem to have scored a lot of late goals which is the reward you get for addressing those problems. With Holgate and Davies looking great prospects and hopefully a quality striker to be signed.things are starting to look a bit rosey
