Ronald Koeman discussion

Well realistically the gap between 7th and 8th is going to be quite bigger than what it has been over previous seasons, which means 70 points for top four is being very optimistic. But let's assume that 70 is reasonable. 34 points out of 48 means winning approximately 11 of our last 16 games. That will be very difficult, but there aren't many games we should be losing.

I agree with the first part, but how so with the second?

I'd have thought the maths suggest that for our purposes we'd need those from 8th down to be picking up a lot of points off those above us...just to bring them back to us.

Have you been on the ale?

We have 36 points. We'd need MINIMUM 70 points to make a fist of it. 34 points from 48 available.

This is ludicrous talk. We've actually won only 5 of the last 17 games or something daft like that, so that trend would have to be exploded beyond belief in the remaining 16 games.

4 wins out of 5 David.

Its all about momentum.

As I say, if we can get the right players in, we can easily chip away those 6 points, then the match at Anfield becomes a CL play off.

Koeman accumulated 35 points from game week 23 and onwards last season. With Southampton. Absolutely doable.

But you have just said yourself, 48 points still to play for, im not suggesting we will get them all, we wont need them all, just most of them.
...seriously, I understand you're elated with the recent turn in form...but form is temporary with these bottlers, and you know it. IF the prospect of actually achieving a CL place came on deck they'd fill their kecks.

Did you consider that countervailing factor?

Hence me putting in the "right players" aspect, if the window was to shut today, we cant do it, but if we get in the required players, the magic and the hunger, then sure, why not David?

Just like they did in 13/14. Year unbeaten at home? Bottled the last game to Sunderland. Got within a sniff of Liverpool, bottled the derby 4-0. Won 7 on the spin when it didn't matter, bottled 4th the second it was in their own hands v Palace at home. Bottled every big game under Martinez and that is something that Koeman will have to work to dispel. This season has carried on the same, bottled our good start away, bottled both cup games, bottled the derby, and now we're winning again when it doesn't matter. Hopefully Koeman will fare better than his predecessors in the key games starting with the only one if note left this season (unless we go on an unbelievable run) the Anfield derby.
