Ronald Koeman discussion

The different systems will require different ventures in the transfer market. If we stick with the current 3-5-2, we will need defensive and wing back cover (Keeper is priority regardless), and we won't see many forwards come in other than squad players.

If we revert to Koeman's 4-3-3, we'll see forwards come in, and if Lukaku does leave sooner rather than later we will see 2 or three striking options akin to what he had at Saints (Long, Pelle, Austin).

Definitely need wing back cover / competition. RonK loves total football 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 / 2-1-1-3-1-2

“Koeman, in the end, was the man who created the 3-5-2/5-3-2 system that the Dutch national team is likely to use during the World Cup. This system, with two very offensive wing backs, gained Feyenoord victories in difficult away games against FC Groningen and PSV, and eventually second place in the league.”

Definitely! We are majorly short in that area. Not sure how long Baines can keep up that role too.

Interesting as well because I was only familiar with Koeman's managerial career at Southampton and not so much before. Did he used the 3 at the back system at Southampton? I thought he favoured 4-3-3.

Perhaps he uses it only when the players are suited to it.

Yeah, sounds great that, but are you able to deny what's being written if you disagree with it? I doubt it, because that analysis is right on the money. If it isn't the floor is yours....
The @blupedro post sums up the alternative view point perfectly Dave. I happen to subscribe to his viewpoint rather than yours on this, as you've probably guessed by now.

Suppose we'll have to wait and see which is right.

Think Bainesy has become a much better defender with age, but it's been at the expense of his attacking prowess. I think he now struggles (compared with Seamus) in the WB role and I'd like to see a specialist brought in.

He definitely used it at Southampton.

"He went bold with his formation and started playing five at the back. It was either 5-3-2 or 5-2-2-1 or 5-3-1-1. Koeman actually tried it towards the start of the season and they had a bunch of disjointed, frustrating performances."

Yep. Play to his strengths whilst he is here. Though I would like him to stay as long as possible.

Reminds me of the Bale situation at Spurs. They are in a better position now and have a much better rounded squad, as before they were top heavy going forward.

Lukaku's contract poses a predicament. Even if he signs a bumper new deal, he could go say next year. It doesn't give us much room to plan, as we want to rebuild now, right away.

I adore Rom, but in terms of our growth would it be better to get a big fee now if he is going to go? The rebuilding would only be delayed if he were to sign a new deal and go next year, unless we really challenged next year and finish in a good position.
As you say it's in Rom's court. My personal view is if we don't get a commitment from him to sign a new contract before the summer is out, then we should do our best to cash in on him this coming window. Deffo don't want to but imo we aren't rich enough to let his value drop to much and it would also give us more cash and planning time to get replacements in . Think it's fair to say we're not going to be able to replace him with somebody equally as good, so we're going to have to replace his goals from other positions.

Deja vu reading that! Sounds like things were starting to click before he joined us. When he uses the best personel for the system it appears to work.

Rom could be crutial in that working for us should he be with us next season.

Biggest things for me would be full back cover, back up forward, central defender and keeper. Midfield us looking strong.

LOL.

Talking about growth and then selling the leagues top scorer in the same sentence.

Don't agree 100% Rom is crucial, I think the partnership between the front 2 is massive though.

If he does stay then he needs a foil. Maybe that can be Lookman / Mirallas / Aguero. Or, we could buy a target man and give Rom a bit more freedom.

Essentially, we need to invest BIG.

Spurs sold there best player, spent all the money on mostly dross and then spent more money the following year on acquisitions (as they do most years).
Had nothing to do with a change in management or philosophy at all then?

Yes it's down to the change in management. But their most influential players are mostly their cheapest buys. I dont think you understand what I was saying.

I would like Lukaku to stay with us, for as long as possible. But, if he is going to move soon, then it's not the end of the world if we get a big fee - And we reinvest smartly.
