Ronald Koeman discussion

Well the further you go the more chance you have of winning

We where beaten at home by a championship side and a relegation threatened Leicester

This was the same since 1995. You don't get more credit by losing to Sky6 teams in cup games. You just lost. Simple as that.

I'm not arsed about the last two seasons

I'm judging Koeman, not Martinez

He's proved he's sound with beating dross, the odd good showing against the weaker of the top 6 but seriously lacking in big games like the Derbys and cup games
Did you honestly bealieve Koeman would change the entire team and their attitude in his first season? It's not like we had an amazing record in the Derby pre Koeman is it? It will take time to change the negative mind set of some of these players to realises that their capable of beating the RS. I don't think some of them will ever learn and they'll need to be shipped off.

As far as cups go we haven't won one since 1995 so I've no idea why you'd think Komean should be any more accountable for not winning one in his first season that was all about rebuilding anyway.

One season is not long enough to seriously judge how good Koeman will be here but the last two season's are significant because they are a stark contrast to this one. I'd say this season was a massive improvement on the dross of the last two.

Judging him against the big sides and his cup runs he looks very very average

Four points taken against Man City, two points taken against Man Utd, a point taken against Spurs and three points (possibly more) taken against Arsenal. We've beaten Man City 4-0 and Arsenal 2-1. Not all the doom and gloom you'd gave us bealieve against the "big sides".

We all know the cup defeats were very disappointing but unless you actually win the cup the run itself is meaningless and no Everton manager has won anything since Joe Royle so you'll have to forgive me if I don't hold that to much against Koeman in his debut season that was all about undoing the damage of Martinez.

What's his excuse for getting knocked out of both cups to poor teams
One was very early doors in the season when he and the team hadn't gelled well together. The other was the catalyst for the run of home victorys since. Nither were good but it makes no difference if you lose in the third round or the final. You win sweet FA.

I would give it a 7.5 /10.
We have finished as high as the ability in the squad would allow. Considering the long term injuries to Bolasie, Coleman and Funes Mori that is no small achievement.
The manager certainly did not take the job to work with the squad that was already in place at Everton. January proved that.

RK is a manager that can get results and with better players in the squad we should be able to get even better results. He has given academy players their chance. However, we have seen that you can't just throw three or four young players into a team and get results. They must be introduced slowly and at the right time. A player like Davies is a bit of a freak and is the exception rather than the rule.

Next season...no idea yet as it all now comes down who we buy and who are sold.
Four or five really good players onto the current squad could see us challenge for the top four...we are probably only an extra two wins away from that this season...it is certainly attainable.

We need a quality goalkeeper, a centre half, a centre forward , cover at left back and I believe we need a more creative midfielder/striker(Rooney?).

This summer Kone will be leaving and I don't see Valencia being kept, I think Funes Mori will leave as well.
Coleman and Bolasie will miss half of next season and Besic still has to have a sustained injury free run.

It is amazing how the entire squad will have been reshaped in such a short time

Seems to be getting his tactics wrong consistently against the better quality opposition.

Without proper cover in schniderlin or McCarthy the decision to try and emulate Utd's man marking of Hazard with Gana was a disaster.

Koeman's tactical capabilities appear more limited than I first thought.

Apart from City and maybe Arsenal at home we've been tactically deficient against better opposition.

Maybe he will get it right with an improvement in the squad, hopefully anyway.
Gana marked Hazard out of the game btw.

Only for his free kick, poor keeping & defending you wouldnt have thought Hazard was even on the pitch.
Nothing wrong with the tactics with a limited squad yesterday.

there will be a rebuild again next season, he blooded young players that we are going to need next season.
euro footy plus Holgate and davies first team players, he is getting rid of the rubbish he inherited, you can not ignore the complete mess Martinez left the squad in, I do not think he could of done much more.

he's being derided as tactically inadequate?

Let's have it right, what he's working with is horrific (kids excluded)

Agree with both sides of the argument, but we are approaching big teams with our tactics signalling obvious trepidation from the kick-off. The conservative tactics deployed yesterday nullify the threat of people like Barkley, he gets lost, marked and ineffectual sitting deeper. Add to that two players consumed by unfamiliar man marking jobs (Gana/Hazard & DCL/Moses). A knock-on effect being that we never pressed enough to ask questions of Luiz who was not up for a scrap with Rom, and for a large proportion of the game, injured.

Why didn't we go at Chelsea like we did City and Arsenal, just doing our normal thing? I feel like he started the game with what should have been a plan B.

...but yes, it doesn't help there are injuries and sub-standard players all over the shop, I trust Ron to take Stek out and probably never to be seen again, the first goal (which I think was soft) and subsequent losing the plot was way worse than Joel's antics the other week.
