Ronald Koeman discussion

Were they though? Serious question.

I'm not being revisionist here, but other than a period between January and March when we just leathered teams at home for fun, we were awful last year too. We had a run of about 10 games without a win, got knocked out of 2 cups at home to inferior opposition, and didn't win an away game for the last 5 months of the season. Look back at what was being said this time last year and it's not too dissimilar to what we're saying now. We had a couple of good months on the back of Lukaku's incredible form but we didn't look like a particularly good side last year in my opinion.

I would sum up last season as mostly just 'doing enough' and one really good run of form with a top striker allowed us to be better than the rest of the dross. Then the cards fell for us and we ended up in the Europa.

As a first season for a new manager, and after the mess of the previous two years, it was of course a decent solid season but not something to get excited about and not something to indicate better things were to come this season.

I really didn't understand the excitement of a lot of fans, many of whom are now angry and screaming SACK, in regards to the forthcoming season especially after we started signing players. I said it during the summer I hadn't a clue how we would line up and play this season, so I didn't know how anybody else could be so confident.

This mess was always possible, as we hired a merely ok to good manager and have replaced half the squad whilst leaving glaring gaps.

I'd love to at least be comforted by the thought that a manager I didn't want or rate should soon be gone, but I really fear the club will actually make the situation worse.

I think the board have to make a big decision here and let the fans know:
A) Back him for another transfer window and ride out the storm.
B) Sack him with immediate effect.

The club is becoming toxic in all areas, some answers on the immediate future are needed.

To be honest, I don't know who the board want, and who I want should be disregarded anyway as the last one I thought would do a job was Bilic, and look at the shipwreck of a team he is overseeing at the Dildo Factory. Still dream of a Simeone though!

I don't think we are ready for the likes of Ancelotti or Tuchel, and I don't think they would want to come to a team that needs molding into such a team - a bit of a catch 22, but if we don't chance our arm, we'll never know.

Honestly think Tuchel would jump at the chance mate.

He's out of a job. Every manager in world football wants to come to the Prem. It's the place to be, and we could give him several million reasons a year to make sure that's with us.

I've done a bit of reading on his previous tenures as a manager - specifically Valencia.

He nearly got an incredible team relegated.

Has previously treated players unfairly - with some even trying to take him to court.

Why was he rated as a good manager? He's not really won anything and inherited Pocetino's Southampton team.

He didn’t really inherit anyone though, let’s be fair. He lost lallana, shaw, lambert, lovren before he even reached and Rodriguez was out long term too. That’s basically a whole new squad he had to take.

I wouldn't say we were awful at all.

Best start ever in the Prem era, for one. And yes, we did hit a rough patch but we also turned it around.

We were comfortably far superior to everyone else outside of the top six, though of course that was in large down to our 25-goal striker.

aye, great point

seen some others saying the same thing that @GwladysPhil has - sorry lads it's bull

Koeman came into a team that was dismantled, and that happened again the next summer.

He improved Saints. He found a system and style that worked. So far this season, he hasn't done that for us or come close to it.

Did anyone else notice that last night he looked on the touchline like he'd been sleeping rough for a week, he is usually in his suit looking the part, last night he was in his tracksuit, unshaven and arguing every paltry decision.

He is a guy under pressure and he's not handling it well, I like many of you I'm sure am getting more embarrassed with every game, I am now expecting to lose every time we set foot on the pitch, the time has now come to end his pain.

The problem is the cost of ending his pain :(

Supposedly he had contact with Chelsea this last summer when it was rumoured Conte may leave. And Bayern will be appointing someone next summer. I think he's prepared to wait for a champions league club and would not fancy the task at hand of turning Everton into a top 6 club which is a huge one which will span a good few years. Make no mistake either, he'd be another Koeman with one eye on his next job the minute he walked through the door. Just don't see it happening but it would be nice if we actually made an attempt given he is out of work.

And for hypothetical's sake, if he doesn't rock up at Leicester I don't see why he'd join us. Really don't think we're in a much better position than them both on and off the field. Everyone has money now. Unfortunately we're in the same bracket as them currently and they've got first shot at getting a new man in whilst we dither around as usual with mediocrity.

Yeah Southampton have always been the team that never remains.

However I don’t think koeman was particularly attacking at saints tbh. His seasons there was based on defensive solidity of fonte/vvd and Schneiderlin/wanyama in front of them. I don’t think they scored many goals

Shane Long bailed Koeman out a fair few times, as odd as that sounds.

Erm he did have Sadio Mane, a bloke who's in the shortlist for the Ballon D'or and had still had some good players at his disposal, Fonte and Pelle. In addition, Van Dijk adapted very well very quickly which can't hurt.
