Ronald Koeman discussion

I did find it funny him saying in the presser about being here a couple of years. I'll just take it as he's Dutch and probably doesn't know that almost exclusively means two.
This is true; in Dutch you'd say 'een paar' (lit.: a pair) but it can mean a few rather than a couple i.e. not strictly two.

From what I read so far, I think he is a pragmatic person. He won't be here for long but he will get us a better position. I think if he do well and no other clubs come get him, he will stay and continue his good work till being wanted by Barca. Not perfect but practical which is what our club needs now. As long he get us on par with other title contenders, I will be happy.
Win-win scenario.

If it all goes well, he can strut his stuff to teams like Barca and we get into the 'big show' and can attract the next tier of Manager to take us the rest of the way.

I haven't got a bad feeling about him but we should be open an honest about what his ambitions are. He is coming to Everton to try and win trophies and leagues, but also to gain a bigger/better job at either Arsenal or Barcelona. He feels we give him a better chance of managing in the champions league and showcasing himself.

The one bit that stood out to me from the press conference was the bit about him not going into a season with 1 year left on his deal. He would rather walk away than do that. That basically means this is a 2 year (maximum) initial project. In 18 months time I suspect we and him will have made our mind up whether we want to continue.

While he may renew in 18 months I strongly suspect he will move on after that. He will get a free hit (ish) next season however the following season he will need to be in the top 5-6 otherwise we will probably look at other options.

What I'm saying is I suppose is there is on the one side the possibility Koeman is moved on and on the other he chooses to move on. I think think there's an awfully big middle ground where he stays. If he does well he will get a bigger job. If he fluff his lines he will probably resign in 2 years.

I'm not putting a downer on things, it's a very exciting appointment. However we need to be realistic with what we are dealing with. He is not going to lay down a long term plan for Everton, that will in part be the job of the DOF and probably the next manager. He will strive to have us in the top 6 next season and the champions league the season after.

There will be no massive long term ideas. It will be a quick process with lots of cages rattled. It's not perfect and I would prefer a manager who wants to be here for 10 years but for whatever reason thats not where we are at. We may never be there again.

Thought he said he was happy to see out the final year as at feyenoord he was on 1 year rolling contracta but southampton rejected that.

Pretty much this ^^, to get the Barca job, he needs to have done a seriously good job here, and with that we can attract better after him, so not overly bothered he sees us as a stepping stone as to get further he has to do really well.

That may be the case. He does contradict that at the press conference though. It sounds like he initiated talks on the basis that "he's not prepared to go into a season with 1 year left on his contract" with the insinuation being it might turn into a Pellegrini situation.

Yes I agree with that 100%. Both parties need Everton in the champions league. Koeman to get his dream job (Barca or to a lesser degree Arsenal). Everton to be able to attract a manager of the capability of an Emery/Mourinho. We have made a pact together.

I think it's reasonable and fair to say that they have an awkward feeling about Koeman. It is a big change from before. It doesn't give me a negative feeling though. It's just different to before.

It is funny. Any other manager in our history using us a stepping stone and we would be out with pitch forks. Yet this time we are happy to say, fair enough, hope he does well before he leaves.

I'm on that side of the fence, if he goes in two years then not arsed, unless he goes to them lot. Im hoping he gets us right back in the mix for european places, and if a season like the one we just had happens then you can't rule out CL either.

I get you, I think the difference with him is that he has never hidden his ambition to manage Barca.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was part of the discussion with Moshiri, hence 3 years.

I hope he realises that once Everton touches him nothing else will ever be the same, not even Barca, let's hope he falls in love as most do at Goodison.

Yeah it isn't set in stone that he will leave us after a certain amount of time. But it is one of those catch 22 situations, the better he does with us, the more likely he is to leave.

To be honest it doesn't concern me that much either end because he hasn't been brought in to revolutionize us anyway, he has been brought in to strengthen us again, get us back where we should be as a launch pad for the future and if we end up over achieving in that respect then it is only a good thing. Whereas the southampton fans cannot see past the point that a manager may want to leave them. It would have been the same with Jose, he would have jumped at a bigger job than us hence why he went straight to united given the chance to.

Three years appears to be the norm for managerial contracts these days.

Easier/Cheaper to sack someone if necessary.

I see Wanyama is going to Spurs - obviously Koeman did not wish to remain at a selling club.

Does this not answer the Soton fans who claimed all that rubbish last week?
