Ronald Koeman discussion

I don't care how we play as long as we win. Have the last 2 years of the former manager not taught us that?

As I said earlier, maybe he is just getting what he can out of this crop of players who look very obviously now like they are very average. Let's see how he does with a few new faces before we start running for the hills.

Chasing long balls and hoofing would make Messi look average

I think the use of the longball is an entirely pragmatic response to the deficiencies within the team. We are appallingly slow at playing the ball out from the back into midfield and forward, lacking any creativity plus offering limited support for Lukaku. As a result we've been showing very limited threat upfront and more often than not lose the ball in dangerous positions.

At least using the long ball gets us higher up the pitch more quickly and requires support around Lukaku. I think it's only a temporary measure to be honest.

Problem is Lukaku isn't suited to it mate, he's actually for his size and strength absolutely garbage as a target man which is how we used him yesterday for example, we are gonna do that then at least put two up front, go 4-4-2 rather than stick with a system thats been shown for two years + doesnt suit these players

£6million a year for Sunday league football

I agree Lukaku is not a target man, and what we were doing previously wasn't working either - I'd be very happy if we went to 4-4-2

No offense but you sound like moyes at his moyesiest

Not running for the hills, merely suggesting that even with these players, lumping the ball long time after time is unlikely to see us win many games in the modern era.

As you say, he may just be using what he has in the most effective way however for those he intends to keep, is he not setting a a way of playing that he will have to undo once he's got the squad he wants?

Look at Klopp last year as an unfortunate example. Despite them looking flakey and a team unable to fully follow his instructions, he still got them pressing. 12 months down the line he has the squad he wants and they are working well together.

I'm just not sure what he is setting us up as.

happy to wait and find out but it's a worthy debate.

Klopp doesnt get them hoofing either. He got Rodgers average but technically sound squad to up their work rate, made them more fluid and got them into 2 cup finals.

From what Im hearing is that Koeman is making us play hoof ball because he thinks the squad is terrible.

The contrasts are huge.

Same mate, was only 15-20 minutes but give Valencia a game, get everyone in positions that they can't hide (which with 4-5-1 they seem to be able to do more IMO) and get holgate into that starting lineup as either rb or cb alongside williams

It can take months for the fitness aspect to come to the full fruition. Considering how shocked Koeman was about fitness levels at the club, not to surprised there has been a dip in form and players look tired and slow starting in games. And various players will respond differently. Yesterday we seemed sharper for much longer of the match. Transition/progress, whatever you call it, no matter who Koemen signs or keeps, its hard work on the pitch that will win us things and yesterday was all about the hard work.

Ugly is yielding us naff all by the way, so unsure why you'd sign up willingly.

Well, I said if Martinez's brand is beautiful, then I'd rather ugly. Obviously, I was being a bit tongue in cheek, I don't want us to play ugly football, I just think there are these notions that passing = beautiful, direct = ugly, which isn't always the case. Martinez's sides over the last few years played some of the most dull football I've witnessed.

every single one of our more technically gifted footballers have lost all form with this clown in charge, no wonder he's been chased out of so many clubs, he's an utter dinosaur, and will represent a very expensive mistake in the clubs history

You're spot on. All our technically gifted players had been unreal for the last 2 years. But now Koeman is here it's all gone to pot.

Can't believe it. Call the police. We've been conned.

I really don't know what Moshiri's view on this. I guess the bottom line is the first two seasons shall be around the EL spot. Anything lower than 7th is not acceptable.
The schedule must have been severely pegged back since the summer then. Remember when it was all talk of getting a top class manager in and going all out for a Champions League spot and putting Everton back at the top table?

did any of them look bereft of all talent for such a long period, even under that other atrocity martinez, every single one of our technical players looks complete and utter tosh with this chubster in charge, he's a dutch gary megson, who got lucky taking over a good side well drilled at soton. gerry, barkley, kev all had good spells in the last two years, even lennon did, this guy is a fraud
