Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman...good choice for us?

  • yes, he'll get us top 6 and stability

  • no, it's uninspiring even if top 6 is back on

  • josé on toast

genuine in-the-knows on saints web (who said it at the time in january) that he was 2 games away from the boot.
obviously, we went on an incredible run....so it never came about

But such is the fickle world of football mate, if it was out there - he knew, you cant blame him for jumping ship, prob doubling his wages when 4 months earlier he was about to be handed his P45.

Seems fair enough to me, sucks to be Southampton, came out on the wrong end of that, but i guess loyalty works both ways.

So the incredible run came after giving the players some time off?

absolutely. we all knew he was going to go. Just 12 months early. As said, you have a very good manager. but from our experience (and we do have some with managers lol) he is far off from pochettino.

cant do any worse than last year with Martinez. criminal stuff there really

when you say 'you'. you don't actually mean me personally right?
apart from say, circa 20 people on saints forum?

it is sad to see him go as he is a good manager. Clearly better than martinez anyway and will do well for you.
but pochettino he most certainly is not.

as said, he is pretty flexible with his tactics. 3 at the back is his go-to when things are not going well. But the fitness was a big step down in fitness with regards to the previous manager. and he loves a big, immobile lump up top for the play to go around
doesnt koeman hold the highest win percentage of any southampton manager in the premier league era?

the incredible run also started when Forster came back from a long-term injury and kept 6 clean sheets in a row. a couple of those defied belief (arsenal away)..you know, those games when it is like a keeper is on something.

he went 3-at-the-back..which is his go-to formation and more importantly, pelle got injured (absolute lump)
then it went from there

I would wonder if he would survive with your new found wealth and owner (and your own expectations) if he goes 4 points from 10 games (8 losses)...now with an obviously improved 'top clubs'

be interesting. After all, your ambitions and expectations are greater than ours etc

My post acknowledges this and I also acknowledge being a workaholic is no guarantee of success but it's my impression that many of the top level managers are obsessively dedicated to work.
Emmery, for example, is said to pour over hours of videos. Perhaps this obsessive quality at least partially increases the chances of success and contributes to distinguishing between the true winners in management and the rest of the field.

Its just as easy to suggest that Moyes and Martinez were workaholics and it didn't really produce any great substance and also could say that there stubbornness over matters derived from being workaholics. I am sure Koeman will know about the opposition and what tactics will be required in coming games.

he does. But he also built his own side that cost about £100m or so. no other manager has had backing like that.

Pochettino delivered an 8th place finish with by far an inferior squad. by some distance

Yeah The Poch was some find, i think his first game was against us and i remember thinking this guys is a very good manager - the change in the team was stark even in that short space of time, well out of our reach these days. Who do you hope gets the job mate?

I think its a critical decision, i often think you guys are one bad decision away from getting sucked into trouble, though your last two have spot on.

And all my season ticket holder mates and just about everyone I work with.

Yeah.

I wanted Emery (didnt we all by the looks of it) but obviously, no chance
Like the sound of AvB but he had a poor shout here in england
Eddie Howe would have been interesting but he is hugely loyal to Bournemouth but who knows
De Boer is the favourite (with bergkamp as his No.2) so, guess him.
Pellegrini was linked but for the life of me, cannot see that. Pochettino, Koeman etc. That is the sort we want. not pellegrini
Moyes is also linked (good god no)

FdB please. Have no idea if he would be any good but our lot have got the last few managers spectacularly right. Pardew-Adkins-Pochettino-Koeman

probably due a dud lol

edit to my last.
A genuine ITK has just put up on our site that we should forget about AvB and FdB as they are low down on our wish list

so after that, feck knows. Reckon we will make a play for Eddie Howe. Les Reed is a massive fan etc
god knows how he would do
