Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman...good choice for us?

  • yes, he'll get us top 6 and stability

  • no, it's uninspiring even if top 6 is back on

  • josé on toast

Well, it's just written to generate hits.

'Wilkins claims Southampton are a bigger club than Everton' will get more hits than 'Wilkins says Koeman deserves top 4'

I despise that publication [Publication is blacklisted due to spam] for that reason.

Their shenanigans is what prompted me to try an produce an alternative to NewsNow in EvertonAlerts because of the repeated link bait nonsense from jarg publications.

Something about him already having had 8 managerial jobs in 16 seasons is proving off-putting to me. A year or two here, a year or two there. He has won the Dutch league three times I grant you but no trophy won since 2008.

If he got the job I would feel satisfied but not over-whelmed.

Exactly my feelings.

Here are some facts for the Southampton fans reading:

Southampton

1 (Yes, just the 1) FA Cup
39 seasons of top flight football
1,567 top flight points
Multiple spells in the third tier, including very recently.
32 505 capacity stadium
2014-15 revenue of £113.7m
Two decent finishes in the last two seasons (7-8), look on for another decent finish this season (7-8).

Everton

9 times champions of England
5 FA Cups
1 European Cup winners cup
113 seasons of top flight football (comfortably the most)
4,402 top flight points
39571 capacity stadium
2014-15 revenue of £125.6m
A poor finish of 11th last season. Currently 12th.

Can't really vote on that poll because it's (unsurprisingly) designed to encourage a negative discussion on Koeman.

Why do you think that? You could more easily say it encourages a positive discussion as the negative option still admits we look likely to make top 6, with more stable team performances. After two disordered seasons in the bottom half that's encouraging, no?

Ideally, top 6 is where we need to be, for that way lies European adventures. I think most agree Koeman is a likely candidate to put us back there, based on his last two seasons at Saints.

The case for "no" is that a high-end Prem-winning candidate like Pellegrini or Mancini would be expected to get us top 4 straightaway, and that this is more desirable as it aims higher quicker. This logic also makes sense as by waiting too long we give the other big clubs a chance to regroup after this strange season: by the time Koeman's Everton is ready for top-4 we may have 5 or 6 really strong rivals.

I went for josé-on-toast...no José no party.

Might not be verbatim, but

"I'm manager of Southampton. I mentioned last week I have one year more contract.

What i mentioned last week as i got asked the same question about my future. We will sit together and analyse this season and speak about the future. That's what the news is today."

I do but I don't think you realise how bookmaking works is all. It's all about liabilities and balancing out the market.
On nearly every event a bookmaker prices up they will make a profit on it regardless of the outcome if they do it right. Not always but most of the time

....you are more qualified than me but I have worked for an on course bookmaker on a number of occasions in my younger days. I've been in the betting shop today and I'll be there tomorrow morning. I do have some idea how to run a book but I wouldn't claim to be an expert.

The profit is mostly secured by limiting large-stake bets and quickly (and strictly) reducing the odds to reflect the number of large stakes, of course this would push those not being staked on up...but by managing the amount of large stakes this would largely protect against potential losses.

Disclaimer: I ran a number of Corals in south-east London for 3 years back when it was manual settling.

Yes there's something to be said for that, I know a lot of Arsenal fans are viewing him as a potential manager too. I suspect when Wenger eventually retires (2 years possibly?) he'll be off there, but it wouldn't put me off as it would mean in the meantime he's put us back on the right road again.

There is along way to go in this - i don't think we will consider making a appointment for another couple of weeks for obvious reasons.

He isn't going to sit there and say he is interested.
