Ronald Koeman...good choice for us?

  • yes, he'll get us top 6 and stability

  • no, it's uninspiring even if top 6 is back on

Just had a conversation with a Southampton fan on Twitter, who told me any neutral would say Southampton to Everton is a sidestep at best. And then went onto tell me Southampton have a better squad, better facilities and more money.

Either I've lost the plot or I've woken up on another planet.

The biggest problem is some fans think that football only began when the premiership was formed. Just because we have not won a trophy since 1995, other fans think we are not that big. What has Southampton won? They were poor in Europe - at least we won our group. We have 9 titles and they have?

So if Koeman becomes Everton Manager and we finish well above Southampton - will they think be are bigger than them?

I don't think we're a 'big club' anymore - I've always said that. We haven't been for my lifetime. But I at least thought we were bigger than Southampton:blush::blush::blush:
This is what years of stagnation have done to our younger fans only the sky years exist . DONT believe it EVERTON ARE A BIG CLUB & the time to prove it has finally arrived .Keep believing kids the times they are a changing !!!

When asked whether he would stay at Southampton he responded with a verbal 'yes' but his body language was less certain.

I too wouldn't take what was said as gospel.
It begins.

"around the top 6" meaning 7th or 8th isn't top 6 at all.

It looks like you expect Koeman to be competing for top 4 from the off...and that's cool. 4th place is also top 6. I'd say that's a bit too demanding to expect top 4 from him during his first season.

I mean, imagine if he didn't quite manage it? Instead he gets us 5th? Would you be caling for his head then? Not a sensible road that...

I'd say being in with a very good shout at 6th on the final day is around the top 6.

I haven't said I "expect" anything yet. You've said you don't think he's the man to bring us to the top 4 and see him as a "stability option" because he's only finishing around the top 6 with Southampton and that this also means he'd take longer than other candidates to push for the top 4. I disagreed as the jobs at Everton and Southampton clearly won't be comparable if he decides to join us. I'm not setting him targets yet, I just don't agree with the "stability" argument.

His eyes were very shifty when saying he was not available, clearly the only possible interpretation is "CAN'T WAIT TO GO BE WITH MOSHIRI!!11!"

21 years old, never seen us win a thing. Listened to mum, grandad and nan bang on about the golden years which makes me believe we'll be back but from what I've witnessed we're miles off that at the moment. That's why this manager is so huge.

I was making the point on another thread why the RS are a lot bigger than us. The same applies to us and Southampton. Them claiming to be bigger than us is like Spurs claiming they are bigger than Man United because of the past few seasons. Ray Wilkins coming out and saying they're bigger doesn't worry me because no sensible football person believes they're bigger.

Whether it's a step up to come to us with the situation of both teams at this moment in time remains to be seen and I can understand Southampton fans being disappointed if he leaves to come here.

But long term, it's not even a contest between who has the bigger ambitions and potential for success.

So just to confirm, he finishes around the top 6 with Southampton, a nothing club with an inability to say no to offers for star players and a negative net spend of £22m and comes to Everton, a club with far greater financial resources with which to build a larger and higher quality squad than he could do at Southampton and we expect his performance to be the same?
Correct. If he has any ambitions of really managing at the top level he will jump at the chance to manage us. His next move in England is his make or break move so why not go to a newly minted club with ambitions of a top 4 spot as a minimum next year. I still want Jose mind you, a horrible man but a winner and that's what we need now.

That quote from Koeman far from being a rebuttal to Everton is a very clear "come and get me" message. "We will discuss the future in the summer". That basically means- I will consider all options after this game but not before it.

He's not going to walk into the dressing room and tell them he's leaving. He'd be in breach of contract for a start. If we want Koeman we will get him, the question is will he be the one we want.

I think it's looking that way mate

I really hope we don't get him. Totally underwhelming appoint if so. He's only done well enough to stay longer than a year at one club before Southampton and resigned after a run of poor results. He might be BK's first choice, but I hope like he'll he's not Moshiri's.

Ok mate.

The candidates for top 4 next season:

Leicester/Ranieri = current champions
Spurs/Poch = strongest Spurs side in living memory, backed up by healthy funds
Arsenal/Wenger = never seem to miss out on top 4
Man City/Guardiola = the world's best coach with one of the world's richest clubs
Man Utd/? = the most successful club in history looking to return to dominance
Chelsea/Conte = a point to prove after a disappointing season
Liverpool/Klopp = same as Chelsea
Everton/? = same as above
