Ross Barkley joins Chelsea, er, Villa on loan

Looks to me like Sarri has been cowed by the "star" players, so he's crowbarred Ross into a role he's not suited, with the expected results

Despite that I don't think he's been too bad. Lots of other players haven't shone here either. Ross has done his best in a poor system

Ross should be in the front three with Loftus-Cheek playing the deeper role instead, but Sarri doesn't want to do that because it means dropping one of the two who aren't Hazard, and he's not got the grapefruits for it

Just my two pennies anyway, I know I'm on my own with this

We surely can't be going down the blaming the manager/system route again. How many managers has he played for now? How many positions, how many systems?

He's just not very good.

He was decent for us for the most part, maybe not as good as we had hoped based on the initial promise but still easily one of our best players. The fact Kovacic has also underwhelmedd playing the exact same role despite being rated very highly should tell you that the tactics at least play a role in his performances.

Having said that its massively unrealistic to think Sarri would change his entire philosophy just to get the best out of Barkley... top priority is getting the best out of your best players and Barkley isn't one of them.

This movement to make out that Ross wasn't any good for us is baffling

Yeah, he's had his ups and downs over the years, but overall he did more good than bad for us and was one our most exciting players of the past decade, whilst also being homegrown

He had many a great game for us. I'll never forget the goals at Newcastle and Swansea for instance

He was a lovely player for us

He was good in Martinez’s first season and very good in the second half of Koeman’s first season. Outside of that he flattered to deceive a hell of a lot.

He did fine under Moyes, Martinez and Koeman for us, even though he had issues with the latter

Conte clearly never wanted him to begin with and Sarri has been playing him out of position

He did fine for a teenager with incredible talent, but never progressed beyond that. His problems today are almost identical to the problems Barkley had in 2012.

His goal record for an attacking player is abysmal and his assist record is even worse. He wasn't the kind of player who'd dominate a game, which is absolutely fine if you can still produce end product (see Salah, or Lukaku at Everton, for an example closer to home), but he never did have end product because he couldn't be decisive if his life depended on it.

Chelsea are learning what I'm sure they already suspected: Barkley isn't made of the kind of stuff your Dele Allis and Harry Kanes are (despite for me being considerably more talented than the former) and can't be relied upon at the top level.

He was very much a hot and cold player. When he was on it, he was exceptionally good on his day. When he was off the pace, he was at times absolutely woeful. He lacked the consistency and standards of a top class player. He had far too many off days where he was less than a 5 out of 10.

Given his obvious ability, I feel his mentality is massively in question.

It's a shame we didn't have better quality to challenge him in that number 10 position as he'd have been out of the starting XI in no time and would have stayed out.

He was terrible tonight, got caught dawdling with the ball in midfield on so many occasions.

Can't see him ever improving on what he currently offers right now. I'm happy he's not our player anymore, I just wish we got a bit more dough for him.
