Ross Barkley joins Chelsea, er, Villa on loan

The club couldn't go through puberty and do his school work for him, there's only so much a coach or teacher can do to positively develop youngsters, a lot of it is on the individual. He's always been thick as a mattress. Some people just are, doesn't mean they're bad or worthless as people but it comes down to just genetics and background I guess. Barkley will never have the brain capacity to be top class player, can you honestly think of anyone in the history of the game who was utterly brilliant but off the pitch an absolute vegetable?

We've had a lot of players who had talent in their feet but nothing in their brain. Kenny, Baxter, Jeffers, Branch, Barkley just off the top of my head.

To be fair Rooney was not the brightest bulb off the pitch but on it his football intelligence was up there with the best.

This is where Barkley falls down, he doesn't have football intelligence at all and the fact that he is also not the brightest bulb certainly does not help in him getting any better at that side of the game.

Is the correct answer.

If Rooney wasn't the brightest bulb, then Barkley was a candle that wasn't even lit.

Rooney also had Colleen....she was a tremendous asset to him.

People say Rooney's not a bright bulb, true he's never going to win Mastermind but he's not a dribbling child like many believe he is, he dispelled that narrative when he did MNF and came across as very articulate and on the pulse. Colleen was no doubt a great influence as well as someone has pointed out.

When I look at Barkley I just see a cow eating grass. His agent practically runs his life and career for him. He's certainly not the only one, sadly many modern footballers really are little boys mentally, but not many players get as much hype and support he did wheb they're coming up. Coaches at the club were talking about him and grooming him for the first team since he was 13. He's never grafted for anything until now when he can't get in Chelsea's side.

I've not seen much of that clip but a lot of people praised Rooney for his insight. Presumably the assumption is 'Scouse = thick'. I did like what I saw of it.

Barkley is a different kettle of fish, and I thought he was an idiot even when he played for us tbh.

I never saw it but I wouldn't doubt it. As I mentioned he has a massive amount of football intelligence. Rooney did mature quite a bit in his mid to late 20's when he came out and did the candid interview about still being a blue and being a bit remorseful over the celebration, etc. SO maybe I was being a bit harsh.

As you said, Barkley is now in his mid 20's and does not look like maturing one little bit.
