Roberto Martinez said:
Martinez wants to protect one of his prize assets, who resumed full training with the Toffees' first team on Monday.

"We keep talking about players who need to make tournaments but I think we need to start creating a way of playing, and that way of playing will demand one player or another," the Spaniard added.

"It is not because bringing so many good names together will give you a chance of being successful.

"What would be the Under-21s' objective - is it to get players into the senior side because if players are already in the senior side what would be the motivation for a player to go into the Under-21s?

"Sometimes we speak too much about individual names. You need to look into it on an individual case; players who have played too much football, the needs of the team more importantly."

Have to agree.

The England setup has already led to a double leg break for Ross and his knee recently exploded.

What he needs is to get his head in the game for Everton (his club first) get experience there and use that and the experience already gained in the senior setup.

Playing him now in the U21 is a joke and is more about the FA trying to cream money out of England 'fans' selling England shirts than about the development of English players.

Fact.

I think part of Martinez's point is that England, both junior and senior team, should decide how they want to play and pick the players that best suit that style provided that they are fit. That may mean that we don't use all our best players but the ones that do play make a better team overall.

It is a bit like the difference between a typical Mourinho team, where Jose has clear ideas of what duties he expects all the players in a certain role to fulfill, vs a Real Madrid team that is a collection of stars shoe-horned together.

It has always been a weakness with England, we tend to focus on the individuals and try to figure a way to get them to play together come hell or high water. An example was the eternal Gerrard and Lampard debate when we should have designed a team that worked well with one or the other featuring as their form/fitness allowed.

Think roberto has it spot on tbh. Ross, Chamberlin, Sterling etc would gain nothing dropping back into the 21's for the summer tourney. And what about the players who got them there?

Once you've moved up and not been involved in the 21's for a period of time you can't go back down. It's madness. There certainly could be an adaption period where some our available for the seniors whilst having an important role for the 21's.

The players mentioned tho are pretty much (immerterial of age) the best players in England and should be starting for the seniors and building a new team.

Gary Lineker slams Premier League bosses for holding back England stars after Arsene Wenger and Roberto Martinez admit fears over Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley and Co

By Tom Allnutt, Press Association Sport

Barclays Premier League managers are hindering young England players' international careers by not supporting them playing for the Under 21s, according to former Three Lions striker Gary Lineker.
The Under 21s secured a place at next year's European Championship on Tuesday with a 4-2 aggregate win over Croatia and it has been suggested England should follow the lead of Germany and Spain by fielding more established players at the finals.
Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calum Chambers, Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley would all be eligible to play for the Under 21s in the Czech Republic next June but club bosses remain unconvinced.
Arsenal's Arsene Wenger and Everton's Roberto Martinez have both voiced concerns about the potential for fatigue and former England striker Lineker expressed his disappointment at the duo's stance.
'Won't happen, but I wish PL managers would support their young players' international careers, not hinder them.' Lineker tweeted, adding a link to Wenger and Martinez's comments.
'All our star under 21 players should go to the finals next summer if fit. Wonderful tournament experience. Other countries insist on it.
'I get managers me, me, me attitude, but wouldn't it be refreshing if, for once, they thought about the good of the national game?'

Lineker sticking his oar in. Theres an intrinsic difference between managers having a "me me me attitude" as Lineker puts it and the likes of Roberto Martinez wanting to protect a fantastic young talent recovering from serious injury yet again and who has already represented his country at a World Cup at senior level. Why doesn't Lineker remark on the fact that by having to turn out for the U21s, these younger senior squad players like Ross Barkley and Oxlade-Chamberlain would be denying another untried but talented young player a chance and a place in the U21s ? I mean, we have got them....haven't we ?

I still think the likes of Barkley, Stones, Chambers, Oxlade, Sterling etc should go to the U21's next Summer. They're capable of winning that tournament if all of them go, this Country needs to breed a winning mentality, you think that U21 team next Summer will more than likely be the Senior England side in a few years, if they play together Summer and win the thing, that stands us in good stead going forward, worked for Germany.

I was at the final last year- featuring Isco Alcantara De Gea for Spain, Borini even scored for Italy. It was excellent.
For any player's own personal professional development I think it is vital for them to compete in these tournaments.
Let's not kid, if the u21 team featured the likes of Wilshere, Ox, Chambers, Stones, Barkley, Sterling, this team could 100% win the tournament. No doubt about it. And is it of greater benefit for these players to play minutes off the bench in a world cup where they get eliminated in the group stage or to actually challenge to be the best on the continent amongst their contemporaries? They'll be able to take the experience of actually succeeding in international tournaments with them up to the senior level, among the other established stars who have never tasted anything close to success in international football.
That being said I trust Roberto to make the right decision- he has always seemingly valued player's taking part in international football (letting Ledson go instead of getting his club debut last year is a good example). But in my eyes I think it would be brilliant for Barkley, Stones, Browning, etc to go and challenge to win this thing.

100% they all should go.

Winning a trophy is great winning a trophy for your country.. 99% of players will never have that.

.....the best players don't neccessarily make the best teams. A group of players have got the nation to the finals, that was a really difficult game away to Croatia the other night that they came through really well. I watched and they were impressive. Players coming down could negatively impact the current balance, especially if they come in with the wrong attitude.

Its important that any player who does drop from the main squad wants to be there.

Also, if we rock up and win the tourny....with all these prem stars....the win will be tainted, and the rest of the World / Europe wont let us forget it either !!

It's like a cheat way of winning.

Its exactly what spain done with De Gea, Isco and the likes
