Ross Barkley

I don't think it's anywhere near a certainty that he's gonna go on and become this world class player that everyone here is convinced about.
Okay mate.

He had a dog turd of a game and was quite frustrating to watch yesterday, but if you cant see that Ross Barkley is going to be world class.... Ross Barkley !.... then you obviously dont have an eye for a player.

I think the adrenalin of coming back after the injury saw him through that day. He's going to need time to get that spark back and find a level of consistency.
Agreed jamo. I think injuries have already impacted our season and will continue to do so. It's hard to expect ross to get his form back after missing the whole of the season so far, which is why I hate it when RM keeps bigging him up. Mirallas and stones will have had long injuries also and will take time to get their form back. Looks like a choppy season this year compared to last year.

He looks to me like sometimes he just can't get proper control of the ball when he's running.

Looks like he's about to trip up sometimes.

Possibly needs a little more composure?

Wasn't his best game yesterday but we can all see his has all the attributes.

All these games are great for his experience.

Didn't like how we set up yesterday. Ross is not as effective pushed out wide left in a 3. Every time he got the ball he was looking to cut inside to go centrally. I think Roberto should have made the switch earlier to swap Naismith for Barkley. Also there is no doubt despite the criticism he gets in here is that we are far more effective with lukaku in the side then without.
On another note (alcaraz challenge aside) I don't see how anyone could not have been impressed with bony yesterday. Great control and awareness of teammates and credit must go to jagielka for the way he handled him yesterday.

What would you say makes him a lot better than say, Oxlaide Chamberlain?

The lad is still young, same as rom. Roberto said last year it's best for him to make mistakes in the prem and learn rather than be farmed out for a pointless loan to a warnock team (dig at moyes)

I did like the way the blues clapped to encourage him after that howler of a miss kick.

Pace, Strength and Power on the ball. Can hit a ball with either foot equally well. Very good technically. Good passing range.
Creates his own space and time as well as the same for other players. That is what makes Ross unique as a football player, I don't know that I've ever seen a player quite with the same power and pace on the ball when running at defences in combination with the level of technical ability he has. He has the potential to be the best in his generation in the same manner as Rooney did, whether or not he fully fulfills that potential remains to be seen. I'm not saying that Oxlade-Chamberlain isn't a good player, but he doesn't quite match up to Ross.

See I think you are basing a lot of that on Martinez hyperbole. 'Unique as a footballer' ..'best in his generation'. It's just not what I see when I watch him.

I agree to a certain degree. Personally, I think he has shown glimpses of his potential which suggest he 'could' (not will) be a top, top footballer.

Yet, he certainly isn't there yet and has a lot to learn: some of that will come through experience; some through coaching; he needs a run of games.

The key words are 'decision making' and 'consistency'. He isn't consistent in his performances, which is directly linked to his decision making.

The latter was extremely evidence yesterday as he was purely relying on his pace and technique, although his choices were in the mainstay wrong.

He dawdled; he ran himself into the corner instead of passing; his choice of pass was limited and short sighted - all head down stuff.

If Martinez and coaches can really work on his decision making (combined with experience) it will dramatically improve him as a player.

He has the technical ability, let's just hope the mental aspects of the game come and then he'll be less inconsistent and offer more in games.

I do not like mentioning those across the park, but have a look at Sterling. His mental side of the game has really improved and look at him now.
