Ok, it's QPR, but he's marking notice that he can play this deeper role in midfield.

* COUGH * COUGH * @davek :coffee:

How is Barkley being played out of position?

Mirallas and McGeady on both wings. Naismith in behind lukaku with Barkley running from deep CM.

Perfect.

He's been getting marked out and is being less effective too far forward. He should be able to drag players away to less croweded space where he'll be more effective and Naismith will get him space too.

He can focus on his running and through balls too

Barkley just needs to have a focused game. Tackling and in attack.

Tonight is the night he should show us really how good he is. Because we're going to rely on him tonight.

Hopefully we see a Barkley-Naisy tag team smack down

Excellent tonight. I've been advocating this role for quite a few weeks now. Think it really benefits the team to have a forward thinking player in there against the likes of QPR at home as well.

Martinez needs to wake up and take note on Barkley playing deep.

Certainly he can play the position. Its just he needs to step that up as its a fulcrum position for the team

If he's not at it in a game we can suffer massively.

But certainly he's got the talent for it.

By God that lads special. That run in the second half was like watching then Royal Ballet.

*means boss you uneducated oiks

Wow, so this is what it looks like when you have a forward thinking midfielder playing in midfield running the game with pace power and incisive passing? Martinez probably doesn't like that though so it will be Barry back in the side once he's fit and we can go back to slow crab like repetitive sideways passing. Barkley and Besic were brilliant. Harrying opponents off the ball high up the pitch, playing it forward early, working both ways in attack and defense, and keeping possession well without this laboured act that Barry and McCarthy engage in. I really think it should be Besic and McCarthy vying for one spot and Barkley in the other with Osman as cover. Gibson can cover any absences and Barry can cover utility positions at LB or CB. This performance, although shaky at times was similar to the second half v City - ie a world away from some of the dross we've served up recently. The constant factor is playing Barkley in a position where he can look forward not one where he has his back to goal. I hope Martinez learns from this.
