Ross Barkley

I don't want to seem as though I'm bashing Martinez relentlessly, because that really isn't my intention, but I wonder whether by Martinez giving Ross a bit too much "freedom", it has been counter-productive.

For instance, I've seen a lot of interviews with Barkley in which he says "I give the ball away, but that's because I'm a risk-taker, etc". Okay, fair enough, his style of play does lend itself to that, but I would prefer it if he was saying "I need to work on making sure I don't give the ball away". I don't know if Martinez is putting enough of a harness on him. He's sending him out there with free reign, and the lad is not learning the right skills at the moment.
I wish he still did take risks. Part of his problem this season seems to be he's trying to hard to not give the ball away and hasn't found the balance however I'm sure that will come.

Why does he get time and Rom not? They're the same age.
Rom already has two successful seasons in the league under his belt (and extra abroad) and came for a big fee in the summer.

Rightly or wrongly that raises the expectations of fans towards him; I think people genuinely forget that he's still a kid in his formative years.

Barkley on the other hand doesn't have as much experience and is a home boy, thus gets some extra leeway from the majority of the fans.

As I've said before, I personally think Ross has lots of 'potential' and I want him to do well, however he's currently far from being a starlet.

Stones and even Garbutt are far out performing him this season, so it's justifiable if people are questioning him - be that ability or work ethic.

As usual most fans choose to take an extremist, polar stance: he's either fantastic and should be exempt from criticism, or he is utterly awful.

Probably the most correct stance is the middle ground... he has potential and should be nurtured, but his performances should still be questioned.

The whole 'Ross is a blue and scouse etc...' doesn't wash with me; if anything it means he should be showing extra effort and guile.

He's certainly done more. Yet people slate Rom all the time and give Ross a pass.
Yeah, I agree that Rom gets a raw deal.

These two fellers at the ground behind me love to give him abuse for any slight thing he does wrong and ignore anything he does right. I remember against Young Boys Lukaku wins a header and knocks it down to Naismith and Naismith instantly loses the ball and one of them shouts 'well done Naismith'. I can't imagine what he'd have said if it was the other way around. Some of our fans that go the match and plenty on here are embarrassing.
