Ross Barkley

I don't think we should play Naismith and Barkley in the same team, because it means playing with only one winger and we look unbalanced.

I think Barkley is a fantastic player, but he looks shot shy this year, lacking in confidence. I think all our players came back from the World Cup feeling like they had let the nation downwind that has carried on, into our season; Baines, Jags and Barkley have all been affected.

I'm not sure what the answer is, personally I just want to see Barkley in the middle, running at defenders, smashing it in from the edge of the box,

Not out wide, chasing lost causes or trying to cut inside

I think it is becoming increasingly apparent that Ross is not the right player for that CAM role. For the way we play, we need someone with a bit more craft for that. Like Osman, but better. I think this has to be a priority next transfer window. For Ross, I think he needs to be looking at that place alongside McCarthy. He is built to be box to box and I think he should be starting to phase out Barry. With a bit of experience he would completely boss that role.

Unless he's faboulous people just moan about him which is becoming sad.

He did nothing wrong last night. Ok he didn't play great, but didn't play bad just kept the ball moving, kept posession, ran into space and actually worked harder getting in tackles (which is what everyone was moaning about)

A bit like kev currently. Very hard to find form when your playing 60 mins every 2-3 games.

And above poster is correct. Barkley and naismith should not both start games. It doesn't work, unbalances the team and they get in each other's way. Plus naismith is incapable of finding a pass to ross which certainly doesn't help the lad!

I'd also add he'd be better suited to a 4-3-3 where There's one holding midfielder. Like chelsea and arsenal play.

Say mccarthy as the holding, with barkley and maybe gibson infront. And ross having the least defensive responsibilities.

Of course he's not in form but this manager is not helping him one bit.

At the moment, Naismith gets in any day of the week over Barkley. I think one of the main reasons(and there are many, all justifiable) why the league has not been good for us this season is that Barkley has not contributed to the extent that Roberto expected. Barkley is at a crossroad in his career....we all thought that this would be his breakthrough season, but if he can't establish himself next season, when I feel we will be playing as a more cohesive unit, I'm not sure what the future holds for him.

Would only play Ross as CM if its in a 3. He lacks bottle and discipline to play with just the 1 next to him at the minute, prone to silly little errors too

Barkley put great effort in last night, but this just seemed to highlight how seriously out of form he is. Naismith, far less gifted than Ross, apparently, makes a major contribution every time he steps on the pitch, and has often turned a game in our favour with a critical goal(Lukaku did brilliantly last night, but it was also a boss slot from Naismith). If only one is to play, at the moment it has to be Naismith.

What does naismith offer other than popping up with odd goal??

He's counter productive imo. Yes he has quality's. You can't deny the guy works his ass off and pops up with goals. But so many attacks and breakaways end at that guys feet.

I think he's contributed to our poor season. Not by being bad, but just by being naismith!

But ross is out of form now and we need some points on the board quick, so arguably naismith (amazingly) is perhaps the better option currently.

Oh what a pickle!

His confidence is low, it is obvious to see.

In a balanced side with 2 wide men and one playing just behind Lukaku, you would have to, on current form as Steve says play Naismith. Don't try and shoe horn them both in to the detriment to the side.

That said, our only current wide an fit players are Mirallas who is massively under performing and Atsu who has up to now been a pointless exercise of Lacina Traore proportions!

He wasn't great last night, but only because people are measuring him against a Wayne Rooney.

He had a tidy game, did more than Mirallas a couple of nice dribbles.

He is a young lad, who needs to forget this season, come back next year, with a decent pre season under his belt and a clear head ready to make an impact.
